I'd like the ability to post by entering only the Source URL, clicking a button and having software populate the entries of Title, Author, Date Published, and Source. The user would still supply Topics and Keywords (if any). This would be optional -- the user could still fill out the fields as is done now.
It's good to have diversity of sites. Free Republic is text-heavy, which makes it easy and fast to scan many posts. But I do think the suggested feature would make it easier to use, like Reddit, where if you enter a URL, it generates a title.
“Well everything I’ve purchased that’s digital broke down much quicker than manual operation....from TV to space heaters. Went back to Manuel and Im a happy camper now.”
Yes, absolutely, same here... And the exercise is good for us. :)
I had a neighbor recently go rent a self driving auger and pay someone to deliver it, operate it, and return it. For only four post holes. Took him a whole day and a lot of money to get all that done when he could have dug those with a shovel in an hour and a half and save a trip to the gym.
This is the culture we now live in... And all I can do is shake my head at the laziness.
Trying to make -- and maintain -- "smart" software is not easy, and unless you're willing to pay for the additional time and effort, I'd suggest we leave well enough alone.
“Of course! They’re both in the big stand up toolbox in the garage.”
Lol, same here! Thinking about archiving them to storage and make room though. :)
As best as I can remember from a weekend phone conversation with Jim while the site was down in ~1999, that was Sun server running Sun OS, Informix DB, lots of perl, and Apache Tomcat caching front ends.
No, I have one right beside my dwell meter……..
“Okay, I understand. thanks.”
It is what it is in real world application. It is very unfortunate that others miss out on handy features because others abuse them and just will not use them with common courtesy. So many good things ruined by this...
Nicely summed up.
I really like FreeRepublic, let’s change it to be like something else……..
Another advantage is how little data it takes to open, might be real handy very soon……
Need a Domain name? https://hosting.qth.com/aff.php?aff=17

Yeah, I wanted a pony when I was 8…
Good luck with that!
I suspect a zillion FReeper wannabees are put off by the "what do you mean I have to learn basic HTML to post?" dimension of "membership." Thus they are scared away, and go join Facebook.
Call me old fashioned or crazy. I know from experience that I appreciate more the things for which I've had to WORK vs been given to me. I wear having to post via HTML etc as a badge of honor. Concurrently, people scared away by the "antiquated" technology are the lowest members of the food chain and will probably be replaced by the rat.
I actually prefer to not have editing.
Too many people could post inflammatory stuff then change it and deny it at a later date instead of owning their words and actions.
I do see where it would be a help as there are times I screw up posting something of making a comment later that I regret and wanting it removed without pestering the mods.
There are advantages to both.
I love the formatting.
It is the most user friendly and easiest to follow a conversation website I have yet found.
It tells you which post you are replying to, who you are replying to, you can view other replies to the same comment, every word on the website is a link that takes you somewhere, and you can follow the conversation back or forward very easily.
And I HATE avatars. I am thrilled that FR does not have them.
I like FR just the way it is.
I get to maintain my typing skills and editing skills just the way it is.
Thanks, but no thanks for your suggestion.
I have been a proud Freeper for 24 years. In my opinion, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it!
I post threads all the time and it’s not a real labor intensive operation.
The amount of time it may save me is not worth messing up a user friendly site like FR over.
