Let the Free Republic site create the Title, Author, Date, and Source, given the Source URL

I'd like the ability to post by entering only the Source URL, clicking a button and having software populate the entries of Title, Author, Date Published, and Source. The user would still supply Topics and Keywords (if any). This would be optional -- the user could still fill out the fields as is done now.
It's good to have diversity of sites. Free Republic is text-heavy, which makes it easy and fast to scan many posts. But I do think the suggested feature would make it easier to use, like Reddit, where if you enter a URL, it generates a title.
TOPICS: Focus Software
KEYWORDS: diy; learnhowtopost; vanity; whiner

This site is running the same software it did 20 years ago. You might as well be wishing for parking assist on a K car.

I’d like editing after posting to correct mistakes and also being able to vote on posts.

Perhaps a $20,000 donation will help.
For me, I love the simplicity of Free Republic. It’s not gunked up with ads and cutesy boxes and pop ups. It’s merely information.

Wanting any site to be like Reddit is asking for trouble. Ha ha.

Yep! I’m a wildlife photographer and would like to share some of my work but with third party hosting required I gave up years ago. I’m a member of 14 forums and this is the only one that still has to use third party hosting. After what Photobucket did to it’s users (holding photo’s hostage) I never again allowed that to happen.

I agree with you. My suggestion would make it easier to post but would not change the appearance of the site for readers.

Reddit sux. They took the usenet format and added a bunch of ads, flashing graphics and such. I guess that’s what millenials want, but I find it distracting and difficult to follow a thread of discussion and typically avoid redit.

Close the thread. Nothing more could be said. Nothing better could be said.

Agreed. If it’s not broken, don’t fix it.

And doing it well, I might add. I subscribe to a citation site called
BibMe.org to quickly cite web sources in APA format. For the most part it's able to scrape most of that data from most websites. Some of the sites simply don't organize their articles with Title, Author, Published Date, etc in an easy to grab format. I think it would be asking a lot for FR to solve this problem for something that takes posters 30 seconds to type out manually. Besides, any code that's written must be maintained through various updates and security patches. These changes can break things at times. The more code there is, the more work is required to monitor and maintain. FR is simple and efficient. Speeding up initial post times with such a feature wouldn't add much to it in my opinion.

I agree, too. The fact that FR is “not like those other sites” is a feature, not a glitch.

Hehehehe...my dad had one of those, the one that would say to the hilarity of everyone except the person who heard it a gazillion times “The door is ajar.” in that weird voice.
And someone would invariably say “It’s a DOOR, not a JAR!” and everyone would roll their eyes in humor at hearing it again...:)
My brother nicknamed the car “Einstein” and it stuck!
