Lithium batteries' big unanswered question
BBC ^ | 05 January 2021 | Allison Hirschlag

As the world looks to electrify vehicles and store renewable power, one giant challenge looms: what will happen to all the old lithium batteries?...

...In your average battery recycling plant, battery parts are shredded down into a powder, and then that powder is either melted (pyrometallurgy) or dissolved in acid (hydrometallurgy). But Li batteries are made up of lots of different parts that could explode if they're not disassembled carefully. And even when Li batteries are broken down this way, the products aren't easy to reuse....

...The current shortcomings in Li battery recycling isn't the only reason they are an environmental strain. Mining the various metals needed for Li batteries requires vast resources. It takes 500,000 gallons (2,273,000 litres) of water to mine one tonne of lithium. In Chile's Atacama Salt Flats, lithium mining has been linked to declining vegetation, hotter daytime temperatures and increasing drought conditions in national reserve areas. So even though EVs may help reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions over their lifetime, the battery that powers them starts its life laden with a large environmental footprint....

why do they keep saying EVs reduce carbon emissions when it is demonstrably false

Its all insanity. EV’s are horrible until they come up with a totally different and workable power technology. The question is why are the deep state progressives so intent on switching you over to them? Remember they want to totally control everyone.

They know what a clusterbeep it will be and also how electricity will be rationed so the surfs cant get uppity and rowdy if they dont like things.

“So even though EVs may help reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions over their lifetime”

right, because the clean electricity used to recharge them comes from the wallplate in your garage, NOT from gigantic fossil-fuel fired generation plants ...

Do you REALLY not know the answer to that question?

Watch the documentary Planet of the Humans. It was made by Michael Moore but he’s not in it and it’s pretty well done. It debunks pretty much every alt-energy technology as being as bad for the environment if not worse than fossil fuels.

In the end, it boils down to a transfer of wealth. Instead of oil tycoons, we’ll have alt-energy tycoons. John Kerry, Bill Gates and others.

Biomass plants starting out burning stuff that would be thrown away but they run out and start cutting down trees to burn them. They show all the crap that goes into making solar panels and wind turbines. They show how none of it lasts for decades like it’s claimed they will. They show the lithium mines. They talk about how there’s not enough of any of the above materials to last for very long. They show all these huge building who’s owners declared them carbon free yet each one has it’s own electric substation. One of Elon Musk’s facilities was one of them.

Very good ammo for arguing with the green leftists especially since Moore’s one of them. Of course in the end, the narrator who had been on the hunt for planet saving alt-energy talked to a guy who had the answer. Too many people. That’s a whole nuther ball of wax. Speaking of Bill Gates.

Lithium sells for ~$40/pound. Cobalt sells for ~$30/pound.

Aluminum sells for about $1.30/pound and copper sells for about $4.40/pound - and they get recycled.

So even though EVs may help reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions over their lifetime...

Okay green weenies, please explain what the optimum level of atmospheric CO2 should be.

I'll wait.

Anybody?

CO2 is only 4/100ths of 1 % of our atmosphere (including everything humans have contributed). Can the green weenies explain how that amount of CO2 causes global warming, strike that, I mean climate change.

More crickets...

The BBC... They have been pushing this greenopoly scam. Now they are suddenly worried about what they have been pushing? BS. This is all planned and coordinated. Which politically connected billionaire will get the contract for the battery recycling mandate?

After decades of fighting to maintain optimum charge on various banks of batteries, I agree with you, however: as an engineer/investor well into my geezerhood, I’ve learned at least one thing: you can’t fight the trend, no matter how ill-conceived it is.
We see “Lithium! Lithium!” in the news, but only a few are focusing on another element that is even more crucial to EV batteries: graphite(Cg). Only the purest large-flake Cg is up to the job, and CCP controls 80% of the worldwide Cg mining and production.
I won’t attempt to pump my investment choices in this, but there are a few other players in this industry that are poised to make billions, and/or be buyout targets for the major LiIon battery manufacturers that need to lock in their supply.

Rare that even the mainstream “news” (and the BBC is certainly “well inside” the usual and very left-wing US ABCNNBCBS Fake News academic-government-environmental industry!) that today’s media dares to address the environmental impact of “their” special-interest lithium hazards!

Perhaps China’s lithium battery industry wants to stop or hurt their Chilean competitors?

Considering it’s the neo-Bolshies at the BBC posing the question, the one certainty is that they wouldn’t be asking if there weren’t a Socialist answer already in the waiting.
