Explanation: There's a big new telescope in space. This one, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), not only has a mirror over five times larger than Hubble's in area, but can see better in infrared light. The featured picture shows JWST high above the Earth just after being released by the upper stage of an Ariane V rocket, launched yesterday from French Guiana. Over the next month, JWST will move out near the Sun-Earth L2 point where it will co-orbit the Sun with the Earth. During this time and for the next five months, JWST will unravel its segmented mirror and an array of sophisticated scientific instruments -- and test them. If all goes well, JWST will start examining galaxies across the universe and planets orbiting stars across our Milky Way Galaxy in the summer of 2022.

Looks like a cubic zirconium.
Looks expensive.
I canโt wait to see it work- I hope itโs deployment is flawless!
Yes, but likely much more expensive.
I did a small amount of consulting on problems in the J Webb Telescope development. Probably added to delays, but it was unavoidable.
I canโt wait to see it work

We got a month until it deploys and 2 more months after that before we see any results.
I just hope that NASA did a better job overseeing construction of the mirrors than they did with the Hubble.
You said NASA and overseeing in the same sentence. If you said NASA and writing a decent specification for the contractors (who do the work) then that would be even more ridiculous.
Very exciting! Unfolds like an origami flower a million miles away. 100 time as powerful as the Hubble - in infrared. Too cool.
A good friend of mine owns a precision machine shop in California. A few years ago a team of engineers set an appointment with him and brought in a set of plans for some complex mechanism with exact specifications. It is an important unit inside this telescope.
His whole family is watching this with great interest. What a cool mark on his history as a machinist.
Better a delay than a momentary fireball slowly disintegrating in the atmosphere!
Looks like a QR code that says I have been Jabbed.
They are looking for evidence of the Big Bang, proof that God exists.
Looks expensive
_____
Yes, around 10 billion dollars.
Yeah, itโs gonna be great if everything works!

So that’s how the Borg started.
If you pay taxes you got one huge jab.
