General Motors (GM) plans on going beyond manufacturing a fleet of electric cars, according to an announcement Wednesday regarding electrification component sets, which are capable of converting most old gasoline-powered automobiles into new-age electric vehicles (EV).

The technology will be used for EV conversion projects and GM expects to target a group of diverse commercial clients and enable them to meet their sustainability targets. Electrification components will open up new business avenues and the company estimates a market growth of $20 billion by 2030 with the increasing demand for zero-emissions technology.

The minerals for these batteries will become less and less and more and more expensive...and we will be at the mercy of the holders of the minerals....Like the Taliban in Afghanistan....China.

Just look at how the "chip" problem is effecting us.

Natural gas and coal is still the way to go.

And I don't care if you have minus "0" emissions, you're not going to change the climate.

GM Releasing Kits That Can Convert Old Gasoline Cars to Electric Vehicles

The biggest issue is the battery. Replacing the average vehicle’s 15 gallon gas tank with an equivalent sized battery does not provide anywhere near the range. 15 gallons of gas is about 270 kWh of energy. Smaller EV’s like the Mini Cooper only have 28 kWh of energy.

Electric vehicles such as the Tesla carry a massive batter occupying much of the floor of the vehicle. There is no way to readily convert a gas vehicle to electric with any meaningful driving range.

I wish I had roll up windows in my car and that little vent window that the old cars had. These electric windows are a pain when they break down....and expensive to repair.

Would like to see the math on increasing load on power plants as millions are charging overnight

“Since they are in the same time shutting fossil fuel and atom, the Earth has to be covered by solar and windmills.
Here goes the farming, forest and national lands!”

Even Elon Musk agrees with you and has said so. It is just never going to happen. The whole concept is barking up the wrong tree and just not possible.

Natural Gas Cylinders in the trunk are an option too. I saw them in Korea and Asia being used where petrol is too expensive.

Like you building with deep cycle batteries oneself is a decent option. If you live in the city and can get forty miles range it ought to be enough to allow you to keep your old vehicle rather than purchasing a new one outright.

I do not charge my Iphone or Ipad on a gasoline generator.

Why would I charge my car via gasoline generator?

In five years, just as we charge our cell phones and many other appliances, we shall plug our cars into the electric outlets.

Yes, I know that electric is made from fuel that comes out of the ground but I predict it and those riding around smoking up the air with gasoline engines will soon be banned.

I really believe this.

But I’ve been wrong before.

Could happen again.

General Motors, a car manufacturing legend, sold out to China and today cannot engineer and build a Chevy Bolt.

An admission they cannot build an electric car, and they hope somebody can figure out the details

Absolutely, with no need to turn the key on to use the windows, or unlock the doors. I actually just did that with my current project. I just built a custom 78 4X4 Chevy van. Someone put electric windows and locks in it back when. I changed them back to hand crank and it already has the “Wind Wing” Windows. :)

And I have this 4X4 1 ton rated van tuned to get 16 Mpg loaded pulling a loaded car trailer, 18 empty. Friend of mine owns an emissions testing shop and it blew him away how clean this thing is running even without catalytic convertors.

I would rather dump 20 grand into an older classic and have a real car than buy a new piece of garbage.

“The minerals for these batteries will become less and less and more and more expensive...and we will be at the mercy of the holders of the minerals....Like the Taliban in Afghanistan....China.”

ELECTRIC COMPANIES, 12.52 cents per kilowatt hour is going to become $1.25 per kWh. And then $12.52 per kWh... A fresh Orange or Apple is going to cost $25 by the time it gets from Ca or Fl to the central states.

Is everyone actually blind to the real true cause and effect of this pipe dream???

I am wondering, why the enviros are still supporting that?

“Have a last look at Grand Canyon! It was great, but sorry folks, we need to cover it with solar cells, we need to save the Earth!”

I daily drove a Tesla S, including a number of cross-country trips. It’s obvious from your post that you’ve never owned an EV.

GM is following in Ford's footsteps, who has already offered a $3,900 Crate Electric Motor and has sold out.....

Batteries and inverter not included

The electrical grid will NOT support millions of electric vehicles charging. There are brownouts RIGHT NOW during which they tell EV owners NOT to charge in the evening.

The plan is to get us out of gasoline and diesel vehicles and then to announce electric cars are not a practical alternative.

You will have NO personal vehicle.

Personal vehicles equal freedom. You will lose all freedom to travel in your own vehicle.

This would be fun for gearheads that like to do custom mods, but for anything else totally impractical.

EV’s have no transmissions per se; hooking up an electric engine to a conventional tranny would decrease range SUBSTANTIALLY.

Combine that with wherever in the heck you might put those heavy batteries (the trunk would be a problem with overloading the rear of the car) and it’s a nutty idea.

This is coming from a guy that owns an EV. I love my Ford Mach e. It’s a great commuter car.
