Turkey or Tofurkey? A protein price comparison for the Thanksgiving meal
The FRED® Blog {Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis) ^ | November 18, 2021 | Diego Mendez-Carbajo

This is the time of the year to give thanks, and the FRED Blog is thankful for the rich variety of data series and data sources available in FRED. In years past, we’ve tapped data from the International Monetary Fund, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, and Eurostat to assemble tasty graphs showing the price of traditional Thanksgiving meals. Today, we compare a poultry-based meal with a plant-based meal.

Let’s start with a data literacy appetizer. The FRED graph above plots the quarterly global prices of poultry (including turkey) in orange and soybeans (the main ingredient in tofu) in green, as reported by the International Monetary Fund. Savor the fact that the units of each series are different: poultry prices are reported in U.S. cents per pound of meat (on the left axis), and soybean prices are reported in U.S. dollars per metric ton (on the right axis).

I think our store-brand frozen turkey was $1.79/lb. It was about $42 for 22.7 lbs, IIRC.

I really don’t care how much tofu would have cost. But now with this idea in my brain, I expect the forthcoming socialist government will force us to eat tofu instead of turkey, within a few years. ICK

Most grocery stores around here will give you a free turkey if you spend $300 or so in groceries in the month before Thanksgiving.

WOW. Good price. I think the Butterballs were $2.49/lb.

Our store isn’t the least expensive, but it is VERY close to home. Happy Thanksgiving!

WOW. Good price. I think the Butterballs were $2.49/lb.

And our local Giant Food had Butterballs at $.99/lb last week. What was really impressive was their house brand FRESH turkey was $1.99/lb. We got the $.39 frozen house turkey, not for Thanksgiving but for a couple of projects leading up toward Christmas.

The Biden administration is a dreadful failure, but our grocery system is doing a bunch to overcome the damage caused by the incompetents and corruptniks.

My store brand turkey is $0.49/lb. I haven’t paid attention to the free deals this year.

We have an Aldi nearby- when they opened, they advertised the “lowest bidder” brands. Have never entered their establishment.

Aldi is primarily very high quality store brands. They are very hard to beat price wise. They also have good prices on produce. They keep prices down by limiting store hours, having primarily store brands and smaller stores.

Sometimes the canned goods and bread are half the cost of other stores.

Tofurkey costs from 10 to 17 $ per pound.

The blogger tries to sell it at soybean cost at .66 per pound. Well, it costs bigger bucks to process raw soybeans into tofurkey.

Liars gotta lie!!!
