The Democratic brand is broken. The infrastructure bill isn’t fixing it.

In the days after the Democratic Party’s collapse in the Virginia governor’s race, party strategists descended on the commonwealth to figure out what went wrong and understand just how bad the national outlook might be next year.

What they discovered, largely through focus groups and polling, was even worse than expected. The problems cut far deeper than the failings of their gubernatorial nominee, Terry McAuliffe, or President Joe Biden’s flagging approval ratings. Rather, the Democratic Party’s entire brand was a wreck.

“Voters couldn’t name anything that Democrats had done, except a few who said we passed the infrastructure bill,” the center-left group Third Way and its pollsters said in a report, obtained first by POLITICO, on focus groups they ran in Virginia.

Most of the voters Third Way spoke with in suburban Virginia focus groups, according to the report, “could not articulate what Democrats stand for. They could also not say what they are doing in Washington, besides fighting.”

And those were just the people who voted for Biden.

Less than a year ahead of midterm elections, in which even Democrats widely expect they will lose the House and, possibly, the Senate, the party is confronting an identity crisis. It isn’t just Biden’s cratering public approval ratings, inflation, or the precedent that the party in power typically loses seats in a president’s first midterm.

Just one year after Democrats kicked Donald Trump from the White House, it’s not obvious to many voters what Democrats are doing now that they’re in charge - despite the enactment of major legislation, including a $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief bill earlier this year and an infrastructure bill last week.

democratic party is a zombie political party. the meaning is that it currently has power, but it is so wounded there is a chance it ceases being a political party that wins elections.

I have a fundamental problem with the “comforting” thought that the Democrats have screwed themselves, people don’t like them, they have failed, and the next round of elections won’t go well for them.

Really?

I don’t think their party has any worries about important election contests in the future. They are solidifying their hold, and the People’s view of the situation just doesn’t matter.

When you start to loose CNN and Polutico, you have run out of someone to carry the water.
No wonder the GOP-e feels safe to come out of hiding for the first time in 20 years.
Of course none of them will admit the Trump economy had a great deal to do with it.

“Just one year after Democrats kicked Donald Trump from the White House”

Best description of the election that I’ve seen yet. Democrats certainly didn’t ‘defeat’ Trump.

.....it’s not obvious to many voters what Democrats are doing now that they’re in charge....

I disagree with this statement - the smart one's know exactly what they are doing now that they're in charge - they (RAT party) are all in on the destruction of America and our culture via incrementalism of Socialist policies and the people were (are) paying attention and are not having it.

The nutty thing is libs actually think a massive crap spending bill will win the day, even without knowing any damn thing in it.

I am get more cynical by the day. There is not a whole lot different between Obummer and Biden's policies. YET Joe seems to be criticized and scrutinized for his lack of competence and poor results, whereas Obummer was not. Not sure why there is a difference in open judgement, can't quite put my finger on it...

This is the thing: the Dems didn’t kick D.Trump out of the WH because of their great ideas. They cheated to win, thus the majority don’t want the Dems to do “something”. Trump was reelected for: safety, energy independence, no illegal immigration, religious freedom, strong military, unity. Instead we are getting the opposite. That’s the problem and the low numbers reflect that. America didn’t vote for this.

That line caught my attention, too, but as a prevarication. No one kicked Trump out of the White House. He left in the midst of treasonous fraud and still retains credibility as history and truth are brought to light. Dems are present in office due to fraud. There’s no way to sell their brand any more than there is a market for sh*t sandwiches.

Well that’s sort of like the Microsoft brand. Utterly horrendous but stuck with it. The Democrats suck but we are stuck with them.

Wasn't it in the 2004 demoncrat presidential primary when the two leading candidates (Kerry & Edwards) got into sort of a freebie bidding contest, each trying to one-up the other by promising that if they were elected, they'd give away more free stuff than the other guy? That was emblematic of the political Ponzi scheme the Dims have been running since LBJ promised he'd have blacks "voting Democratic for the next 200 years."

And the only plank of the demoncrat party ever since has been more bread and circuses. You shouldn't be held accountable for your shortcomings because you're not responsible (Whitey is!) and you needn't get a job because we're going to give you free room and board, free health care, a free Obamaphone and a free college education (which will be worth exactly what you've paid for it).

The problem with a policy of appeasement through bribery is that in order to assure long-term obedience you have to keep upping the ante. To feed their constituent's ever-increasing hunger to be absolved of all personal (or criminal) responsibility, they've already pushed the political envelope so far to the left that if anyone stood for POTUS today campaigning on the exact same platform that demoncrat demigod (and serial adulterer) JFK ran on in 1960, they'd be branded a right-wing extremist.

Now they've pushed so far to the left that the only adults still in the room are mortified that they're about to fall off the edge.

So now would be the time to push.

agree with you 100% because they cheated there are a lot of ex dems that won’t be voting for a democrat that voted for Biden. if they had cheated and Biden had been competent the situation would not be as bad for them. the fact that he is incompetent and competent criminals pushed him on the democratic party means that there are consequences for the party not so much Biden. for the next 20 year whenever there is a presidential election you don’t have to attack the candidate you just attack those paying for his election. this means that a certain percentage of voters that voted democrat in the past even if they have a candidate that they like what they see.

Even Nancy wants to retire to a conservative state close to the water.

Admitting that one climate change is a hoax to the conservative government is the proper way
