Where the Heck Are We Going to Charge All of the Electric Cars? (only 9.24 years left)
Slate ^ | 10/28/21 | Henry Grabar

On May 7, 2019, Lisa Lemble and Robert Gordon cut the ribbon on Ann Arbor, Michigan’s first curbside electric vehicle charger. It was an ordeal that required nearly a year of negotiation and permitting, and cost the couple about $15,000. “Mainly we want people to know that if they live in the city of Ann Arbor and don’t have a driveway and don’t have access to a garage, that it’s possible to put in a charging station curbside,” Lemble said at the time.

Possible, yes. Easy, no. More than two years after the Tesla-owning couple installed their dual-nozzle Level 2 charger on the curb in front of their condo, their example has not caught on. Missy Stults, the sustainability and innovations manager for Ann Arbor, said she does not know of another such project in this city of 120,000, home to the University of Michigan.

“It is so bedeviling,” Stults said. “Multifamily is a large portion of our housing stock and we start to have challenges.” The city estimates it needs as many as 10,000 electric vehicle chargers to prepare for full electric-vehicle adoption, and Stults is focused on getting them into publicly accessible parking lots - like the four “fast chargers” in the City Hall parking lot Ann Arbor put online just this Monday.

As for the streets, where residents like Lemble and Gordon park? “Trenching in the right of way gets complicated,” Stults said of the digging required for such a project. “And then what tends to happen is people park in a spot and don’t move.”

Ann Arbor is one of many cities confronting a vast challenge as Democrats pin their hopes to reduce U.S. emissions on the rapid, widespread adoption of electric vehicles: How do you get power to people who park on the street?

Read to the end of this article where he gets into the math regarding the energy required.

“A better question would be “How will we generate enough electricity to recharge all the EVs?””

177 new natural gas power plants permits have been approved, some are being built as I type this and the rest will be started within 1-3 years.

Why would a parking deck operator invest big bucks for something isn't needed?

Well, they wouldn't, but according to the article the lack of charging stations is THE biggest problem with electric vehicles.

A local supermarket recently installed a Volta charging station. So far, I haven’t seen anyone using it.

It’s very hard to determine what it costs to use. The Volta website is evasive on that topic.

Supposedly, it’s free (possibly only for 30 minutes), but they say on average, it only delivers 30 miles of range per hour, they limit you to 2 hours, and it won’t charge Teslas.

Seems kinda useless.

… burning of evil fossil fuels at the generating plants rather than at the point of use (i.e. the car engine)…

Excellent point.

“Home charging stations that use solar is the perfect off the grid vehicle.”

To charge 50kWh (half charge on a Tesla battery) in 8 hours, you need 6.24 kW of solar. If you have 400 watt solar panels which are about 6 ft by 4 ft each, you need about 15 of them just for one EV.

I’m thinking of building a mini coal plant.
I heard we got coal, just dig.

So we are going to build fossil fuel power plants to run our electric cars.

How does that help solve the liberals pipe dream?

If natural gas is the way to go, then there may be better alternatives than electricity plants generating power stored in batteries.

For all of you questioning charging stations, 15k seems high. It’s basicaly a stove power cord.

If the power company wants your business I suspect down the road theyy will put them in for free just as power companies string electric lines to new housing projects and they pay for it in most cases.

When our housing development was started from an old farm the local power company brought in the lines and boxes. The developer never paid a dime.

“And when you need a new battery, what much will the loan rate be??”

Current federal law requires EV companies guarantee their batteries for 10 years and from what I have been reading they are going to change that to 12 years

First, I guarantee that timeline is bullshit.

Second, it doesn’t address the conductors, transformers, & metering from generation facilities all to the way to homes.

Third, what humans are building all this new infrastructure?

It’s been proven even if coal fired plants all they did was supply electric to EV cars, less total pollution would result than if all the cars were gas.

When gas cars first came out in 1905 there was not a single has station in the US.

Ignoring your claim that gas powered cars first appeared in 1905 (they made their debut in 1895), you offer very misleading info here.

The first successful fuel pump was patented in 1901 by a bloke from Thor, Iowa, John Tokeim. The manufacture of the pump commenced not long after.

It's true that the first dedicated gas station didn't open until several years after the fuel pump, but that's a distinction without a difference.

Countless mom and pop markets installed gas pumps to service the needs of the 10,000+ cars ca.1905.

Your EV's will never be as convenient and reliable as gas and diesel powered vehicles are.

8-10 years or 100,000 miles. Since most of us run up more than 100,000 miles, you’re either going to get a new battery or trade it in with 10 grand on the line.

So much bogus info on this thread. 15k is a bogus figure for home charging stations.

They cost $300 for low end up to 4500 for high end with average cost $1000-1200.00. it is a glorified stove or dryer cord.

Not arguing about the efficiency of electricity vs. petrol in powering individual units. Just noting that when that efficiency makes economic sense, the market will adjust. Until then, we are merely paying people for bad behavior just so we can feel sanctimonious.

Without new tech, the day of economic breakthrough will remain elusive.

“For the life of me I cannot figure out why conservatives are agauinst ev’s.”

Maybe if you were smarter you might, but dumb people only see a small problem they think they are solving and fail to see the bigger picture.

So, let’s start with you. Exactly what problem do you think EVs solve?
