A young mother who was shot by a school resource officer in Long Beach, California and was declared brain dead is expected to be removed from life support on Thursday against her family’s wishes.
18-year-old Mona Rodriguez was shot in the head by a Long Beach Unified School District safety resource officer on Monday while inside a car that was attempting to flee the scene of an earlier altercation near Millikan High School.
According to the school district, the school resource officer was responding to an alleged fight between the woman and a 15-year-old girl. When Rodriguez, a man and a boy tried to leave the fight scene in a gray car, the school resource officer opened fire, hitting Rodriguez, Long Beach police said.
Rodriguez was sitting in the front passenger seat when she was shot, police said.
Video of the shooting posted online appears to show the officer, who has not been publicly identified, firing at least two shots at the car.
Investigators determined Rodriguez initiated the original altercation and that she and the 15-year-old girl “are known to each other,” though the motive for the altercation was unknown, according to police.
Rodriguez’s boyfriend of two years and the father of her 5-month-old son, Rafeul Chowdhury, got emotional outside Long Beach Memorial Care Hospital on Wednesday, saying, “I want justice for my girl, my baby momma, the love of my life.”
“I want him in jail for what he did to my girlfriend,” he said. “She did not deserve it.”
Family and friends held a candlelight vigil for Rodriguez Wednesday night. Family members said that the hospital has notified them that she will be removed from life support on Thursday against their wishes. If that happens, the family wants the Attorney General to investigate and wants the officer charged for her death.
“We want justice for my cousin. She did not deserve to get shot. She might have been doing something she wasn’t supposed to but she was unarmed, she was already fleeing, there was no reason for that cop to fire,” said her cousin, Alex Villasenor.
The family’s attorney said they have no recourse to stop the hospital from disconnecting the young mother from life support.
The hospital has not commented.
School officials said no students were hurt in the shooting and that there was no indication any students were involved. No one from the Long Beach Police Department was involved in the shooting.
According to Long Beach police, a 20-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy were also involved in the brawl. However, police are investigating their “participation level” in the fight.
Long Beach police and the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office are both investigating the shooting. The school safety officer who fired the shots has been placed on leave.
Be grateful you don’t live in the Marxist cesspool of Calipornia.
This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)
The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.
Bad shoot.
The victim was clearly in a vehicle that was driving away from the shooter when the shooter opened up into what appeared to be the rear window. At the time of the shooting, the vehicle was no threat to the shooter. The shooter is an idiot.
Washington is getting there. One used to be able to do private sales of guns. Now I can’t legally hand my gun over to my wife or adult kids to try out at the gun range or gravel pit! (Legally. It still happens all the time and nobody enforces it, but, legally it is an “illegal transfer” and is spelled out specifically in the law! (I forget how many pages long the law is).
They also just recently passed a law that you have to have training in order to get a concealed carry license. IIRC, somebody put out a free video course that one can take and that qualifies.
“ No one from the Long Beach Police Department was involved in the shooting.”
It sounds like he was not a cop. But an armed security guard.
More about the school resource officer job.
Are they like social workers? That is what the new WOKE policing is all about.
My first thought when I saw the title was to guess the shooter was not white. The media would never waste an opportunity like this to promote racial strife if he had been white.
But yes on the vid he is clearly well tanned.
Saw the video. Black officer shoots unarmed white/Hispanic girl. BLM will not be interested.
I am guessing the woman shot is not black or this would have been all over the news and the cop would be in a world of hurt.
Sounds like a bad shoot to me but I don’t know all the details.
They left out the part where “ video showed the car driving towards the officer”.
They tried to hit him with a 2 ton weapon.
No
Yep. Doesn’t sound good
“Good riddance” ???
What kind of attitude is that? She was 18, arguing with a 15 y/o girl she knew. She left. Passenger driving away.
Yet you say Good Riddance like ‘yeah, nice that for whatever minor circumstance where no critical life/death and no child molestation and no act of war and no terrorism occurred but, it’s good an 18 y/o girl’s life was snuffed out regardless of it being by an over-reactionary security guard, because hey - we don’t need ‘their kind’.
We’re not talking about someone in a gang living a gang-bang life and killing/drugging/molesting/raping as a way of life.
You should rethink the attitude.
Just saying.
Absolutely bad shoot, unless there are some more details not in this story...
It's one of those "it depends" issues. As long as the family's decision aligns with the institutional norms, yes. But the rock bottom power lies with the government and the industry, not with the individual or his family.
It's beneficial to the government and the industry to preserve the illusion of personal independence.
Actually God makes the final decision regarding the end of life. Families may try in vain to prolong it. Hospitals may want to pull the plug, but only God knows when it’s your time to go.
I am in agreement with the hospital on this one. Being artificially kept alive is a waste of time and money. It’s time to let go.
Agree, Bad Shoot.
I’ll see if I can find the video. Best way I can describe what it shows is that the officer was on one side of the auto when it turned into the street and was driven away from the officer. His response was to fire at the vehicle from behind.
