A young mother who was shot by a school resource officer in Long Beach, California and was declared brain dead is expected to be removed from life support on Thursday against her family’s wishes.
18-year-old Mona Rodriguez was shot in the head by a Long Beach Unified School District safety resource officer on Monday while inside a car that was attempting to flee the scene of an earlier altercation near Millikan High School.
According to the school district, the school resource officer was responding to an alleged fight between the woman and a 15-year-old girl. When Rodriguez, a man and a boy tried to leave the fight scene in a gray car, the school resource officer opened fire, hitting Rodriguez, Long Beach police said.
Rodriguez was sitting in the front passenger seat when she was shot, police said.
Video of the shooting posted online appears to show the officer, who has not been publicly identified, firing at least two shots at the car.
Investigators determined Rodriguez initiated the original altercation and that she and the 15-year-old girl “are known to each other,” though the motive for the altercation was unknown, according to police.
Rodriguez’s boyfriend of two years and the father of her 5-month-old son, Rafeul Chowdhury, got emotional outside Long Beach Memorial Care Hospital on Wednesday, saying, “I want justice for my girl, my baby momma, the love of my life.”
“I want him in jail for what he did to my girlfriend,” he said. “She did not deserve it.”
Family and friends held a candlelight vigil for Rodriguez Wednesday night. Family members said that the hospital has notified them that she will be removed from life support on Thursday against their wishes. If that happens, the family wants the Attorney General to investigate and wants the officer charged for her death.
“We want justice for my cousin. She did not deserve to get shot. She might have been doing something she wasn’t supposed to but she was unarmed, she was already fleeing, there was no reason for that cop to fire,” said her cousin, Alex Villasenor.
The family’s attorney said they have no recourse to stop the hospital from disconnecting the young mother from life support.
The hospital has not commented.
School officials said no students were hurt in the shooting and that there was no indication any students were involved. No one from the Long Beach Police Department was involved in the shooting.
According to Long Beach police, a 20-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy were also involved in the brawl. However, police are investigating their “participation level” in the fight.
Long Beach police and the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office are both investigating the shooting. The school safety officer who fired the shots has been placed on leave.
Bad shoot, imo.
guy won’t be identified....he’s not white....

Yep, if these statements are factual, it sounds like a bad shoot.
I think so too.. Pretty girl with a sweet face, wasn’t doing anything she deserved to die for.
+1
I thought the family makes the final decision on ending life support. Am I wrong?
I have not seen any video here. Did the driver of the vehicle she was fleeing in attempt to run the officer down?
Additionally, no one involved in the incident was armed, except the "resource" non cop, and the incident occurred in a parking lot that was near a school but not on school district property, it may be a private parking lot.
I suspect this "resource" may end up wising he was never born.
In Biden's Marxist Totalitarian Amerika you are.
Good thing the cop was black or there would be hell to raise.
It sounds like a “bad shoot” but frankly, I no longer care about these kinds of people. What, she comes to a school to start a brawl atudent??? To hell with her. Good riddance.

All of the "School Resource Officers" I know of are sworn Police Officers assigned as SRO's, either Sheriffs Deputies or Police Officers, depending on the jurisdiction. So this is an "Officer Involved Shooting" with a legit LEO. I have not seen video of the shoot so I can't say if it was justified.
Shoot someone for fleeing from a fistfight....that’s crazy
Even for freepers who love cop shoots perp
“A Long Beach “school resource officer” is not (legally) a cop and has none of the protections or privileges that a sworn police office has.

Thank you...was wondering about this. he has a gun and around our kids...
metmom...arth ping
That would be the only excuse Joe
Interestingly, in the liberal State of Washington we do have “liberal” (in the actual sense) gun laws. Although the state is chipping away at them. BUT - in the laws regarding use of firearms and force, the police are held to a stricter view of the law than a citizen is. In theory anyway.
Unless this was a felony assault (with a weapon of some type, even a club) the shooting at them fleeing would be illegal. Unless of course they were driving towards the guy or somebody else in order to do harm.
Here is the quote: "Long Beach school safety officers are armed, but are not accredited peace officers like regular cops are. Their official job description includes patrolling school sites “and adjacent areas to provide safety and protection for students, staff, equipment and property; assure compliance with applicable laws, codes, rules and regulations.”
