A swarm of bees killed more than 60 penguins on a beach near Cape Town, South Africa, officials said Saturday.
South Africa National Parks said in a Facebook post that 63 African penguins were found dead at Boulders Beach, noting the deaths “occurred suddenly some time between Thursday afternoon and Friday morning.”
The penguins were transported to the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) to conduct post mortems, which found that all of the penguins had “multiple bee stings.” Officials also found numerous dead bees at the site of the incident.
Officials will continue to monitor the site.
"The African penguin population is rapidly declining, and it is very sad to see the deaths of so many healthy, most likely breeding adults," said David Roberts, SANCCOB’s clinical veterinarian, according to NBC News.

Birds and the bees...this should be interesting.
First Old lady: If it laid an egg, it would roll down
the back of the telly-vision set.
Second old lady: Ummmm. I hadn’t thought of that.
First old lady: Unless it’s a male.
Second old lady: Yes. It looks fairly butch
Bees, or wasps? Unless their nest is attacked most bees are pretty laid back about other critters being around. Wasps, on the other hand, are the most irritable angry anti-social xenophobes to exist on this planet.
And those are their good points. They have a large venom sac, and can repeatedly sting their target while also biting with their strong mandibles.
Unless there was a colony of African bees (quite possible), I lean towards this being the work of wasps.
😄
There are certain species of bees that build hives on or near to the ground. Bumble and Carpenter are two of them.
Maybe the lead penguin happened to wobble on top of the hive entrance and the rest of the penguins followed, thus caving in the Bee’s main Foyer and screwing up all their little Bee plans for that day.
Sad. My wife and I went there 8 years ago on our honeymoon and ithe penguins were incredible.
If they were bees they would have left the stinger and poison sac in the victim then the bee would die.
Wasps have no barbs so they can sting, and sting and sting again.
Asian murder hornets?
It said there were dead bees found at the site.
Oh, Intercourse the Penguin!
The bees made the penguins take the jab.
