Polanski, Horowitz. Hometown’ follows Jewish filmmaker as he tours his hometown of Krakow with fellow survivor and photographer Ryszard Horowitz, whom he met in Krakow Ghetto.
The film follows Polanski as he roams the city with his lifelong friend and fellow Holocaust survivor, photographer Ryszard Horowitz, whom he met inside the wartime Jewish ghetto.
The documentary is about “memory, confrontations with the past, transience, trauma, fate,” said Mateusz Kudla, who directed and produced the movie with Anna Kokoszka-Romer.
..."Through these two characters who were lucky, who survived, we also wanted to show the tragedy of all those residents of the Krakow Ghetto who never made it out,” he told AFP.
In one scene of “Polanski, Horowitz. Hometown,” which opened this year’s Krakow Film Festival, Polanski recalls seeing a Nazi German officer shoot an elderly woman in the back, the blood spluttering out like water from a drinking fountain.
Horowitz, who was among those helped by German industrialist Oskar Schindler, rolls up his sleeve in another scene to reveal the number inked onto his forearm when he arrived, aged five, at the Nazi death camp Auschwitz.
“Sometimes I’ll randomly glance at it and think it can’t be true, it must be some kind of stupid joke. Is it possible that I was there and that I survived?” Horowitz says.
The filmmakers also captured the moment a visibly moved Polanski met the grandson of Stefania and Jan Buchala, the Polish Catholic peasants who hid him from the Nazis

IMHO, Polanski directed the best version of MacBeth.
I can’t count the number of documentaries and videos I’ve viewed and books read on the Holocaust.....from survivors to those who hid Jewish people to how Mossad caught the Nazi’s. etc.etc. It’s all interesting and ‘gripping’ to view.

No he doesn’t. I was extremely prejudiced against him, going into this film. I don’t particularly like his movies besides the pianist.
But after listening to his and Ryszards stories, what struck me most was: how do you carry on living after experiencing such horrors?
There is a monument in the Warsaw okopowa Jewish cemetery which reads, and I am paraphrasing
“My grandmother on my mother’s side had 17 grandchildren, my grandmother on my father’s side had 14. I am the only one that survived. The rest were murdered by German barbarians.
I will never forgive them”.
And you can feel the intensity of that hate in the words. And you can understand it.
How does one continue to live and not be overcome by hate as that man was? It is incredible comparing the two
One of the five Hungarian Jewish survivors featured in "The Last Days" is the late Tom Lantos, who served as California representative in the US Congress from 1981 until he died in 2008. Lantos was hidden in a safe house set up by Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg, who saved thousands of Jews in German-occupied Hungary during the Holocaust.
I sometimes research the occasional documentary to learn more about the subject. In this one, Tom Lantos, a former Democratic Representative from California, interested me to know his stance on abortion. To my horror, I discovered he voted in support of 'partial-birth abortion.' For the life of me, I can't fathom how anyone who was an eyewitness to the Holocaust and survived it could support the current Holocaust.
Many who survived became nihilistic.

The Nazis had more than enough Zyclon-B to kill many more people than there were Jews in all of Europe, so logically they intended to turn it against the Slavs. In addition to working them to death as slaves to defeat the Allied forces.
Yes, gassing was a small fraction of the number killed. Being a youngster a couple decades out from the genocide I remember photos of people who were starved or worked to death or both. They were not killed by gas. The Japanese did the same to Allied troops, they worked them till they died of starvation or death. Again, look at the photos.
How can one see the photos of the Holocaust, the Japanese atrocities against the Allies and Asians or the Holodomor in the Ukraine and deny it? What about the eyewitness testimony of American GI’s?
Just some information to those who run across trolls who try to conflate current politics with the Nazi genocide. Yes these trolls are real and don’t try to argue with them, you will waste your time.

Possibly a film documentary can be made about older men plying an underage girl (provided by her parents) with alcohol and drugs to sodomized and pleasure them selves in various ways and then when caught skip town to avoid prosecution and punishment. A friend who loves his movies attributes his misdeeds to the horrors he experienced. I do not.
However, he has been a great director.
