Currection! Washington Post forced to correct article claiming Indian cuisine uses only ‘one spice’ after backlash

The Washington Post has published a correction after one of its writers was accused of racism for jokingly claiming in an article that Indians use only one spice in their cuisine. Humor columnist Gene Weingarten criticized Indian food last Thursday in an article titled ‘You can’t make me eat these foods’ where he claimed it’s “the only ethnic cuisine in the world insanely based entirely on one spice.”

“If you like Indian curries, yay, you like Indian food!” Weingarten wrote, before adding, “If you think Indian curries taste like something that could knock a vulture off a meat wagon, you do not like Indian food.”

The Washington Post has added a correction tonight to the top of the @geneweingarten column pic.twitter.com/p4yM7ar9Wk

— Katie Robertson (@katie_robertson) August 24, 2021 The article sparked a wave of backlash, with critics accusing Weingarten of being ignorant and racist, and pointing out the obvious – that Indian cuisine in fact uses more than one spice.

I love Subcontinental cuisine—vindaloo, chicken or beef jalfrazi, dal makhani, seafood tikka masala, nihari—you name it—best washed down with a good Indian beer such as Kingfisher.

Joe Biden was overheard saying “You can’t knock a vulture off a meat wagon without Indian spice.”

My favorite ethnic cuisine, also sadly, the only type of food I’m completely unable to make myself.

I count more than 60 spices used in Indian cuisine here:

There is no spice called ‘curry’. The ‘curry powder’ you buy in the supermarket is just a collection of spices that might be found in some particular curry.

There are only three great cuisines in the world - French, Italian, and Indian.

“Humor columnist Gene Weingarten”

Jewish name...they don’t like Indians because Indian kids now are running circles around Jewish children, who are pretty much all to busy being ‘outraged’ and ‘woke’, to study.

I agree with him. Unless you like currie flavoring; Indian food is not very good.

I’m not a picky eater and don’t care for it at all.

My understanding is that there are regional and family recipes for curry, which serve as a base for the spice palate used in a household. This base is usually kept as a large batch for use in cooking. Is this incorrect?

I used to despise Indian food. I started liking it in Kabul. The food at the cheap transit hotels in Delhi was even better. I would look forward to the meals on Air India. Here in the states... only eat it at an expensive restaurant in the Chicago suburbs, and it’s not as good as the real stuff.
