American workers rush to take advantage of pandemic bargaining power

A pandemic-tightened labor market has given willing and able workers more of an upper hand with their employers for the first time in generations. While workers are trying to take advantage of this rare moment of opportunity, economists are less convinced.

Worker power is the ability of an employee to command higher wages and benefits and set terms about their working conditions. Since the 1950s, worker power has generally been on the decline as the power of corporations and shareholders grew and union strength fell.

But now the nation has the most job openings it has ever had since the Bureau of Labor Statistics started tracking data in December 2000. There were 10.1 million job openings recorded at the end of June. That means that for every available 100 jobs, there are only 94 unemployed people available.

“Bargaining power” my ass. You have the communists - who are writing this article giving everyone free housing on the back of people who strives hard to earn and work for a living compared to these slobs.

Let the landlords kick them out again and see how long this “bargaining power” lasts

*********

I see that around in some of the stores I frequent. I notice that
Walmart got into that side of things back when the lock downs
were in place. They continue and apparently do a good business
with this service.

It must be quite profitable if the store can afford to pay that kind of money for that kind of work.

Stores can probably not afford these salaries in the long run. They are desperately trying not to completely shut down and go out of business. The left hates private enterprise. They want the government to own/control everything… Disgusting

where we are the people filling this role are less than enthusiastic to be there. it can take 45 minutes to get your online order. The delivery people are soooo slow. I get when its busy you may have a wait, but it seems their lack of speed creates the backlog. I would be runing back and forth to fulfill peoples orders.

Imagine what happens if they turn the screws on employees to get vaxxed.

The surveys of employees already underway to figure out if they are vaxxed, unvaxxed and their opinions on vaccination.

If the unvaxxed have the courage to quit and some are talking that way well the employers will be deeper in the hole.

45 minutes? For a delivery? Are you mad?

You should be glad.

I have a family member in that boat...Get vaxed or quit.
Promising career in health care may be ending next month...

It is happening to health care employees all over the country—both in private and public facilities.

Do a search on nursing mandate protests and you will see from Sacramento to New York, Florida, and Michigan...All across the USA :(

Irony is that in Houston, TX, where they fired 100 or so nurses, they are in the midst of a nursing shortage...

That means that for every available 100 jobs, there are only 94 unemployed people available.

But how many of those 94 people actually want to work? 10?

When i go to pick up in the parking lot? I think not. 45 minutes past my notification time is mad. they have maybe 3 people for 10 parking spaces, run in and out of the building, 45 minutes for a prepped order 30 yards from the store is excessive.

If you noticed, one of the ways they pay for this service is to have different prices for food items online than it is in the store. This is not an absolute technique but if you do it enough, people effectively pay a premium to get the items delivered to the car and thus, pay for the added employees.

I used the pick up service and stopped because I noticed I could not get the ‘some’ of the same deals I could get when I went into the store.
