Fasting May Have Become a Health Fad, But Religious Communities Have Been Doing it for Millennia

The practice of fasting has entered popular culture in recent years as a way to lose extra pounds. Featured in the bestselling book “The Fast Diet,” it advocates eating normally on select days of the week while drastically reducing calories on the remaining days.

Fasting has been shown to improve metabolism, prevent or slow disease and possibly increase life span.

But the practice is far from new. Around the world the pious have been fasting for millennia. As a scholar of religion, I argue that there is much to be learned from religious fasting, an embodied practice, meaning that it connects the body and soul.

I have been doing Intermittent Fasting for over 3 years and probably will for the rest of my life.

Many many benefits.

I still can have and do have my cheat days and I recommend those days.

I eat once a day around noon and don’t usually eat until the next day at the same time.

I adjusted in 3 days no problem.

Yeah, but were those Essenes living in mountain caves fasting in order to combat their cellulite?

Were the medieval monks fasting in order to get rid of their love-handles?

Read the whole article. Meh. The only thing that it underscores for me is that current society is so oblivious to the idea that the new “fad” is old stuff. The current wokesters are just discovering stuff well known 50 years ago. Reminds me of the hippies who “discovered” fashion from the 1890’s....beards...mustaches...longer hair..spatz..3 piece suits..mens headgear..and whole unprocessed foods...oooh..so groovy.

Do you do hard physical work on the days you fast? I think I would fall over if I keep up with my work and eat nothing but one meal. Also, how many calories do you have at your noon session? Is it a big meal?

People fasted all the time in days of yore. Some for religious reasons and some had little choice.

Average lifespan: 40-45.

I have been on a 6 days of eating, 1 day of no eating (a Friday fasting day) schedule for a while now.

It’s modeled after the 6 days of work, 1 day of no work schedule per the 4th Commandment and the first week of creation from Genesis.

I’ve read how the stomach and the rest of our digestive system benefits and likes a day off as much as we do.

The weekly goal is to quit eating at sundown on Thursday and then not eat again until sundown on Friday.

I try to get supper in before the sun goes down and then “go hungry” until supper on Friday.

Not that big of a challenge, right? I mean really, how tough could that be? Well, it’s harder than I thought.

It’s an interesting experience each Friday, both before and after those inner voices and hungers start complaining about it.

I drink a lot of water, but sometimes those inner hungers and their complaints are hard to ignore … those voices get so ultra-insistent, you know?

I have caved … 3 weeks ago, those inner voices won and I had my normal breakfast. I lost the inner challenge.

The next week, I asked Jesus for some help and, what do you know, I didn’t have a problem. Wasn’t all that hungry at supper, either, even though I put in a lot of physical work that day.

So, I asked for help again this week and had the same experience … even dropped a couple of pounds on the scale this morning, too. Well, how about that … thankya, Jesus!

I do everything normally.

In addition to Intermittent Fasting, I also try to do low carbs and very often Keto diet.

Joe Rogan talks about both on his podcasts. Look them up. Very knowledgeable guests. Lots of science behind both.

My one meal is a good sized meal. (OMAD)

Thank you. I’m trying a few new things. When I tried the intermittent fasting for a few days, it was not pleasant, therefore not sustainable. Maybe I was doing it wrong. I didn’t lose any weight either.

Feel free to FR Mail me for more information.

I have been doing this for a while and have helped others do one or both.

Sometimes we share stories about our Cheat/Off days which I feel are important and so do many of the experts.

Average lifespan: 40-45.

Very weak point. High infant and child mortality lowered the past’s average lifespan dramatically.

Today about 13% of pregnancies end in abortion. That’s about 1 out of 7. If you included the deaths of those people, today’s average life expectancy would be reduced around 13%.
