I understand that they (medical industry) must be able to see virus differences under electron microscopes, but I'm curious how it is possible to determine tens of thousands cases.
Does anyone understand the science for determining the variants of local viruses?
LOL - Good luck getting a serious answer to your question. There is genetic sequencing equipment that is used to determine a swab sample’s sequence of genetic “letters” which will identify which variant it is. Many testing labs have this equipment.

It’s a made up in my opinion. If you go see the doc to get tested, the test will either come back positive or negative. It won’t tell you if you have Cluster 5, Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, Epsilon, Zeta, Eta, Theta Iota, Kappa or the Lamda Variant. Just Covid. I guess symptoms may come into play, but I don’t think these folks no what the heck they are talking about.

That type of testing seems to be very speedy these days. Or that’s the impression I get from crime shows.
So, how long does it take to do a DNA sequencing these days?
I recommend a diet of proteins, fats, and roughage. (Salmon, broccoli with cheese, and wild rice for instance). Poop will shoot right out with no drawn out arguments with the commode.

Where I work, we do a swab. It checks for Covid-19, influenza A & B, and RSV. There is no test, that we do, that tests for the Delta variant.

I’m currently getting over a (non-COVID) sinus infection, and I lost my sense of taste and smell completely for a while. It was ridiculous when the powers that be first raised that as a symptom supposedly unique to COVID. For as long as I can remember, if I get anything from a cold to the flu I always experience a period where I can’t smell or taste anything. That’s just normal when your sinuses are clogged, and when there’s also a coronavirus blocking certain receptors.
These people have been experts at convincing us that common occurrences are somehow “unprecedented.” Similar to how every gust of wind, rain drop, lack of rain drops, etc. is now labeled as “extreme weather.”

Just stabbing in the dark on this one but I guess the DNA sequencing equipment is fairly widely available and faster than one may think these days. But probably still and arduous task to run through 1000s of samples.
South Florida now has the Colombian strain. Sooo how do they know it’s a “colombian strain”. Starting to think they are making stuff up. Just had a client in that was scared to death. “Even if your vaccinated you can still catch this new strain”. Then why did you just go get vaccinated.

You need the four ‘B’s: beer, beans, berries and broccoli. You do however, have to be careful about your personal ‘carbon footprint’ caused by an increase of emissions of ‘greenhouse gasses’ after your meal.

There is little science in today’s hysteria, but Delta has been described as more contagious, and I have found no explanation.
Delta is the name of the variant. However , at this point it is a guess based on symptoms. No scientific conclusion has been made. No RNA sequence. No electron microscope findings. Nothing but guessing.
In the real world, the delta variant would be identified by the spike protein substitutions: T19R, (V70F*), T95I, G142D, E156-, F157-, R158G, (A222V*), (W258L*), (K417N*), L452R, T478K, D614G, P681R, D950N.
However, in left-wing politics world, everything is made up.

I’m sure you’re right. It’s a near certainty that they don’t sequence 100% of cases. The percentage breakdowns between variants is probably simply based on the sequence results of whichever subset of cases they happened to sequence. That’s likely “close enough for government work”.
