‘WE ALL QUIT’: How America’s Workers Are Taking Back Their Power
Motherboard, Vice ^ | 7/23/2001 | Lauren Kaori Gurley

Posted on 07/27/2021 6:08:41 AM PDT by Sixgun Symphony

Motherboard spoke to economists and historians about why fast food and retail workers around the country are suddenly quitting en masse.

Something remarkable is happening in fast food establishments, retail stores, and restaurants across America. You may have seen photos of it go viral. You may have even experienced it in real life if you've dined at a Chili's or Applebee's and the hostess apologizes for extra-long wait times.

“WE ALL QUIT, SORRY FOR THE INCONVENIENCE,” disgruntled employees posted in giant letters on a sign outside a Burger King in Lincoln, Nebraska earlier this month.

My wife and I have made a practice of eating at a variety of restaurants in Pocatello and Idaho Falls over the last 20 years. Lately, we've experienced extremely poor service and poorly executed preparation of foods at places that previously were outstanding on both accounts. The only way I can respond is to cease patronizing those establishments. They deserve a vacant building with a real estate "for sale" sign.

I always liked to eat at Burger Duddle; that’s my pet name for all the franchise burger joints.

I am now so sick of McDonald’s - they suck and I’ve been McDonald’s
“UGLY AMERICAN” my entire working life - I always went straight to the first Mickie D’s I saw overseas. It was always fun. Germany kinda put some skids on me for eating there, but in Hong Kong they rocked. Here in the States I am tired of old-cold-fires and the menu. Even the coffee is suspect these days because no one knows how to make it....

I use "Big Kahuna Burger" myself.

There is a consequence for the bad service and products. Customers aren't coming back. The failed enterprises will shut their doors and there won't be a place for the unskilled, minimum wage job seeker. A huge clue that you are in for crappy service is a sign on the door that says, "Now hiring cooks and servers".

There is a secondary issue in play. A couple nights ago, my wife and I had just concluded an evening drive to watch deer feeding. We wanted to grab a couple tacos and iced tea at Taco Bell on the way back home. No cigar. They have supply chain problems. All of the items that we had any interest in ordering were not possible to prepare. A similar issue cropped up at a couple of the local "sit down" restaurants. A shorted menu due to inability to access necessary ingredients.

it’s not a chain problem. it’s a pay problem. Truck drivers are quitting in mass too, they are just moving on to other things.

People who have worked through this whole thing are starting to see who the suckers are, those of us who worked through the whole thing.

There might be psychological reasons for much of what is happening.
Some of it is irrational and some is something else?...a break down in the consistency? or dependability?
What started out as a two week affair wound up being nearly 2 years.
And that is another element..uncertainty. Will they” lock down America again?

This is the second time I’ve heard the “getting better jobs” excuse. But that would be reflected in lower unemployment numbers and that isn’t happening. One liberal friend asked me to believe these former grill cooks and servers had all opened their own businesses!

Please do not stiff your server’s tip over the food quality. Our family is heavily represented in the restaurant industry, from a full fledged chef to a grill cook, to a restaurant manager, a bartender, and a regional director. All of them will tell you the server is NEVER responsible for what happens in the kitchen. This would include a wait for your food if the kitchen is short staffed.

On a recent trip to Florida we noticed an absence of black female servers, where in past years these women would have been in the majority. In Forsyth Ga. the Shoney’s was closed due to the labor shortage, while the restaurants in the downtown area were thriving. All of the servers and cooks were white. The Cracker Barrel restaurants had sufficient white female servers but lacked enough cooks, leading to a longer wait for food. Our local Bob Evans has a similar problem, a lack of cooks, although that has been a problem for well over a year.

I debated whether to add the ‘sarcasm tag’ to my post. I guess I should have. :-)

If the cities are Africanized then the rural areas are 50% or more Mexicanized as agriculture hires illegal aliens to reduce labor costs.

There ain’t much Left of the America I grew up in.

The reason why older adults work in fast food restaurants is that much of our industry has been outsourced to slave states like Red China.

Think on that for awhile. Stop bashing workers, you make yourself into a stooge for the people that outsourced what had been good jobs that sustained families.

No, the numbers are wrong. The fly over zone has lots of illegals but not the segregated concentrations of Africans in the City States.

Stop bashing workers...

I'm not bashing workers, I'm bashing idiots. Apparently you didn't read the headline..."WE ALL QUIT".

Seems to me, you are making my point for me.

These idiots took the jobs from the teenagers who need to develop job skills for the future. And because of that, we are now highly automating that industry.

The government is artificially reducing the labor supply and employers are refusing to pay more so A POX ON BOTH HOUSES.

Why $10.00 Big Macs, why not say $20.00 or $30.00. You pulled this out of your butt.

In central VA McDonalds is paying $15.00/hr to start. The prices on the menu have not changed very much. Labor is not that biggest cost driver in most business.
