Explanation: Can a gas cloud grab a galaxy? It's not even close. The "claw" of this odd looking "creature" in the featured photo is a gas cloud known as a cometary globule. This globule, however, has ruptured. Cometary globules are typically characterized by dusty heads and elongated tails. These features cause cometary globules to have visual similarities to comets, but in reality they are very much different. Globules are frequently the birthplaces of stars, and many show very young stars in their heads. The reason for the rupture in the head of this object is not yet known. The galaxy to the left of the globule is huge, very far in the distance, and only placed near CG4 by chance superposition.

Mom, I can’t go to school today because I’ve got a cometary globule.
This looks like Kenny G barfing.
Is that like a ruptured spleen?
What a coincidence!
I’m heading to the VA Hospital next week to have them look at my, ‘Cometary Globule.’
Sounds painful but it’s not. ;)
Gorgeous, as always! :)
Do you know anything about telescopes? I want to buy us one (because we have NO light pollution where we live) but I only want to spend a few hundred bucks. Any suggestions?
Those “filaments” are electrified plasma Birkland currents. www.thunderbolts.info has a lot of info about the electrical nature of outer space. It is far from the “vacuum” Einstein proclaimed it to be and from which he generated a number of erroneous conclusions.
The best bang for your buck is a dobsonian reflector. At a few hundred bucks, most other scopes will leave you disappointed. A 6”-8” aperture dobsonian is a great all around visual scope, but might seem a bit big. A pair of binoculars will also give some nice views.
https://www.cloudynights.com/index is a great place to ask questions, and the moderator of their “beginners” forum is “Wisconsin Steve”, so you might even get some local advise.
I don’t know much about telescopes, but maybe someone can chime in.
Thank you! I’ll check that out.
I had a friend that was an amateur astronomer and just used a backyard telescope to gaze at the Moon, which was his ‘thing.’
He now has a crater on the Moon named after him, which is pretty darn cool. ;)
(And it’s for reals - not one of those things you can buy on Mother’s Day or Valentine’s Day, LOL!)
That sounds painful!
IT’s THE BAT-SIGNAL, ROBIN!........................
I got a letter from the VA yesterday telling me they have Free Vaccines for me and my wife.
Like I didn’t know.
Every time we go there they are at the door telling everybody.
What a waste of $$$$$$$..............
It’s a matter of size. The vacuum is containment
