When I learn of things like this, I wonder, was G-d hitting the Honey Mead a little hard that day to create THIS? ;)

We used to see those things quite often in Southern New Mexico when we lived there.

The Potato Bug. As a kid these things scared the hell out of me. It is also called the child’s face, skunk bug, skull insect, old bald-headed man, devil’s spawn and earth baby.

What is the appropriate garnish? Melted butter, or mayonnaise?

Whip scorpions are cool. The scary ones are the sun spiders/camel spiders. They’re not venomous, they can’t really hurt you, but they move faster than a democrat chasing a $20 bill through a trailer park.

They can say what they will about our wonderful four-season northern climate, but we don’t have creepy crawlies that shoot acid! Or red ants, wild pigs, armored possums or anywhere as many slitherins...

Thelyphonida is an arachnid order comprising invertebrates commonly known as whip scorpions or vinegaroons. . They are often called uropygids in the scientific community based on an alternative name for the order, Uropygi (which may then also include the order Schizomida).

Kewl! Just saw one of our resident Speckled King Snakes. They get the run of the place. Otherwise Copperheads would plague us.

People wondered why I always protect and nurture box turtles (tortoises).

Their eggs are the Speckled King Snake’s favorite food. Maybe we’ll see some Vinegaroons, but we’re probably too far north and east.

I think that thing inspired the D&D monster the Ankheg…

(I loathe Ankhegs, my first D&D character died after getting soaked in a spray of acid from one on his second adventure.)

I knew a guy who claimed that when the Louisiana National Guard trained at Fort Bliss, near El Paso, the safety briefing included an admonition that the vinergaroons were not desert crayfish, and should not be collected for etouffee.

“Exploring the desert in search of food and love”

The Eagles made a lot of money singing songs about that.
