A hard coal power station in Hamburg that generates 1,600 MW was shut down for good on July 7, according to a local news service, a mere six years after its initial opening. And, the Moorburg plant's owner, Vattenfall, aims to pursue a new, hydrogen project at the same site, designed to transform offshore wind energy into green hydrogen.
This is a power plant that lasted barely longer than a U.S. presidential term — practically unheard of for power plants generally, which are naturally built to last for much longer.

And note that I will not even flinch!
Maybe soon instead of just the Black forest they will have Black Germany.
So if these Germans are so anti coal and totally against”climate change” how come they built a brand new coal plant just 6 years ago when the climate change hysteria was going on?
Don't worry...between the forest fires which could have been prevented and this decarbonizing, we won't have forests to shade us and feed the earth and the air.
It WILL most assuredly kill millions of PEOPLE with high-priced, scarce, and unreliable power. People WILL soon die of heat, cold, starvation, food poisoning (no refrigeration) and untold other unintended consequences of this insane folly. This insanity diverts scarce economic resources from where it could pay high dividends (e.g., areas that need clean water and municipal sanitation) to useless and extremely wasteful projects such as this. Bjørn Lomborg predicted this 23 years ago in "The Skeptical Environmentalist."
They’re going to maintain the plant for fill-in electrical generation, and use some of the plant to produce hydrogen using off-shore wind power.
Using excess wind power to separate hydrogen seems like a good idea. Whether it’ll be more than a drop in the bucket is another matter.
And it will only get higher as they move to 100% renewables.
To offer perspective, I pay 8 cents/KWH here in E. Washington state.
Under each wind turbine is a house sized block of concrete a steel , I wonder what that does to the ground water
Insanity. "Hard coal', i.e. Anthracite is a clean burning smokeless fuel. It is about as clean as natural gas, even without any special remediation.
Wind? Look at your wind turbines on a hot summer day. They don't turn. There is no breeze. Wind is as erratic, as erratic as the weather!
—” pay 8 cents/KWH here in E. Washington state”
Here in DuPage County Il, the published rate is $00.785/kWh.
BUT! After all the added taxes and charges $00.15/kWh.
Why does it take FIVE workers to run one mower under the lines?
One coming, one going, one shiting, one mowing, and a supervisor.
—”Under each wind turbine is a house sized block of concrete a steel “
Not much different than a similar size house with a basement.
The problem is when it comes time to remove it.
What happens when the wind doesn’t blow?
It’s my understanding that one of these windmills doesn’t generate the power it took to make it during its service life.
—”What happens when the wind doesn’t blow?”
The French will be happy to sell them power, with a long-term contract.
—”windmills doesn’t generate the power it took to make it during its service life.”
I have seen that statement, many variables, location, length of service...
If the service life is similar to the coal burner in the article...Not good.
Where does Germany put the blades when they wear out? We bury them.
“This is a power plant that lasted barely longer than a U.S. presidential term ..... which are naturally built to last for much longer.”
Plants are usually designed to last 25 years before being rebuilt and run another 25 years. Our local coal power plant went on line in 1977, and has been rebuilt to meet Obama standards, and is still running.
Other coal plants I know that went on line in 1975 have been shut down and destroyed.
So we are not the only country overtaken with stupidity! The sad thing about it is that this relatively brand new Coull plant was probably equipped with the latest pollution control equipment. Economic idiocy!
I have seen coal, oil and gas fired power plants that are over 50 years old.
