Weekly Garden Thread - July 17-23, 2021 [Everything Zucchini Edition]
July 17, 2021 | Diana in Wisconsin/Greeneyes

Posted on 07/17/2021 5:45:51 AM PDT by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

No clay at all around our house, very good soil
No snow dump or salt either

Looks like today is my day to get all of those minor projects accomplished in the gardens. My plans are to: plant hyacinth bean seeds I got from my Mom, deal with zukes and Swiss chard, dump a potted plant that is going nowhere, take out the compost and shred newspapers to add to the pile. Also, my houseplants desperately need a drink, as will I by the end of the day!

Garlic question! I just dug it so its a little dirty yet I kept the varieties separate but did not mark them, one row I only got 3 bulbs, the row was full like the other on the left, but in the last 4 or 5 days when the mosquitos were so bad most of the row just disappeared. Could not find even a trace just 3 bulbs. Something got it but there was no sign of digging. We have had a mole problem but I read moles don't like garlic. But I digress I also noticed each variety had different seeds - one has tiny seed heads and the other had little bulblets near the base of the plant. Does that tell me the variety?? Also when can I plant these? Right away? I am in Michigan.. And do the seed heads get broken up for planting? Thanks for any advice O Wise One! 0-02-01-b33ab2be7c6a9ad6c69b43672fde126ee422bbb86f7ab4068f2a746b18dfcf2a-428be661d3357afc 0-02-01-5ae037e77c7de5c82815b6b886f67d07418cd5c6e9d56956944150b827fc0773-9f64a4feb1aab36e Since it is my first garlic success of course I am thrilled!!

Thanks, Liz! Nice to know there’s an actual ‘recipe’ for something I make quite a lot during Zucchini Season. I highly recommend this; it’s yummy! :)

We had a Japanese restaurant in Madison that was to die for. They made this as a side dish, but of course right in front of you and with great theatrics. ;)

(Kind of a knock off ‘Benny Hana’ restaurant.)

They made an awesome drink called ‘The Universe’ with I don’t know WHAT in it, other than I learned to love Midori Melon Liqueur.
