We Need to Build More EV Chargers, but Where?
Car and Driver via MSN ^ | 5/22/21 | Annie White

President Joe Biden has announced a plan to spend $174 billion to make it easier for Americans to choose electric vehicles. Biden wants $15 billion of that money to go toward building a national network of 500,000 charging stations by 2030. The day after Biden's announcement, Representatives Andy Levin and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez - both Democrats - announced that they had revised their existing bill on electric vehicle infrastructure so that it would align with Biden's new plan. Republicans oppose Biden's plan. Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) called it a "mandatory rush" toward EVs (it's not - Biden has declined to back a California proposal that would ban the sale of gas cars by 2035).

Whether or not Biden's plan can weather the slings and arrows of a bitterly divided Congress, an EV charging network is popping up across the country, driven by efforts from private companies and various government initiatives. But where will all those chargers go?

That depends on what's used to determine the optimal charge station layout, according to Mehrnaz Ghamami, an assistant professor in civil and environmental engineering at Michigan State University. Ghamami led a team of researchers who developed a plan to optimize Michigan's EV charging network for inter-city trips and trips within high-traffic urban environments. The study's goal was to plan a network for 2030, which meant the team had to consider both the existing capabilities and adoption rate of EVs and charging networks and the potential for future higher adoption rates, higher-capacity batteries, and the wider availability of fast chargers. The state also directed the team to plan chargers with "uniform distribution throughout the state, for equity purposes," not just in areas where road traffic or EV adoption are already high.

How about existing Gas Stations

We don’t have the electrical infrastructure to support our current electricity usage. That’s why there are brownouts

As a special bonus, you will get to hang out in their stop and rob convenience store for countless hours waiting for your car to charge. Heh. A joy for sure.

That’s going to be a huge part of it. Biggest problem now is getting the charge down to 5 minutes. Very difficult to do at least right now.

Winner winner, chicken dinner. As I asked in #20, where is the power for these stations going to come from both in generation and distribution.

There won’t be enough room for the number they’ll need if all the vehicles are going to be electric considering the amount of time it takes to charge an electric vehicle.

“upgrade their electric service, and install one or two along with the existing pumps.”

I can fill up my car in a couple of minutes. I don’t think charging will ever by that fast.

Also, I am not sure if connecting electrical devices while standing over tanks of gasoline is the best idea.

Yeah - and for those who don’t want to wait 4 hours for the guy ahead of them to ‘fuel up’ - tough - he’s stuck

Wow...per this site, In a charging station, you get to charge a maximum of 120 kW per car, and with this, it will take around 20 minutes to charge to 50% and one and a half hours to charge the tesla to 100%.

I am in and out with my carbon footprint-enhancing vehicle in 5min.

Yes, I know...most people charge their Tesla at home. But how many times will owners forget to charge at home or will Johnny or Mary forget to plug it in?

Most people hate charging their phone or realizing they're at 12% before going to the store - and in the latter case you can charge with a portable battery pack or plug it in the car. With a Tesla...well...you'll need to change your plans.

There is no way this will catch on organically in a bigly way.

See you’re being logical here. That’s the wrong way to look at it. In the liberal mind first you get rid of ICE cars, then you build EV’s, then you build charging stations and then lastly you figure out where the electricity is going to come from. If it all goes according to plan none of it works and people have no workable personal transport options and thus lose their freedom of mobility. The real issue is resolved.

Charging stations are already obsolete and they aren’t even built yet - as I predict these cars will eventually be built with interchangeable battery cells. Much like a propane tank for a BBQ grill, a driver will just switch it out, rather than sit at a station for two hours.

You can see it coming.

They also do not count the amount of energy and raw materials needed to produce these things.

Someone, somewhere is very likely going to use more raw materials and energy than these things would save in their lifetime.

Put the charger in your vehicle owner's garage, so you the vehicle owner can pay the electric bill.

Tesla has new 250KWH chargers, but they are vaporware in many locations. Also the car has to be a Model 3 or newer models S and X. You only supercharge to 80% unless you absolutely have to a have a full charge. The battery will take the full charge rate until 50% or so, then starts to decrease. It doesn't make any sense to wait around a half hour for the last 20%.

The way most gas stations make money is volume which means that each customer is in and out in a short period of time - like your 5 minute fill.

EV charging stations will have customers parked for far longer - up to 30 minutes per reference, resulting in lower volume; to make it up the station will need more area per station then an ICE station to increase volume. The result is the EV station owner has a bigger lot size costing more money and, barring that, will have to jack up prices to turn a profit.

Sounds like a recipe for massive government subsidies to EV station owners. So this insane EV craze will be government subsidized top to bottom, or federal taxes go up even more for everyone.

Existing gas stations are built around the idea that you show up, spend three minutes pumping gas, and leave.

Electric charging will not happen in three minutes, so you need chargers to be where the car can sit charging for an hour or more.

Where?
Easy.
Just let these morons buy their electric cars and then watch the highways and interstates to see where the clumps of them running out of battery juice stall out.

Then put in chargers stations that charge for the kilowatts with the energy equivalent of gasoline at the rate of $20 a gallon.

I read recently that 25% of Electric car owners hate their car. The primary focus was poor distance per charge and time of charge. There were concerns about charging stations at home needing to be more powerful, but primarily it was actual distance per charge as opposed to the glowing sales pitch they received on purchase.

And it was even worse in cold climates.
