The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!
Thanks, Pete! :)
A woman.. :)
And I have a thornless Honey Locust that drops inches of inflorescence!
Tracks all over the house. (Wish I had a mud room, next house has to have a mud room!)
Most my chickens have names. I find it’s easier to be able to ask at dinner how Oscar tastes (rooster stew) or Mystery was (roasted hen we call it “picken chicken” then we eat sammies and finally have soup)
Kids seem okay with it. They grown now but it was fun dinner talk when they were young. Not one walked away from the meals. It was and still is good.
Which kind of wrens? House wrens, I’m guessing, or Carolina?
It’s interesting how differently we can view the birds. Here wrens are fine. They build their own nests in spots where the bluebirds can’t fit. The holes are a little smaller, I think.
Besides the House Sparrows, our Bluebirds have to deal with food competition from Starlings, and Cowbirds like to lay eggs in Bluebird Cardinal, and Wren nests.
Nature can be very cruel.
I agree. Farmers do not name their livestock for a reason.
Tomatoes? They come already named and don’t run when its time for a salad!
You are most welcome!
Amen. I have been canning like crazy this week. I have most things transplanted. Still have several beds that I don’t know what will be planted. Will be glad to focus more on outdoor work this week.
Hubby is putting up siding on the “shed” and we are hoping for some dry weather to get the bobcat in too finish up the grading.
I experimented with starting and transplanting some beets, and some lettuce that had outgrown the space-didn’t eat enough as it was going along.
One garlic bed is having problems. The other seems to be ok. The bed with problems started turning yellow way before the scapes even started. When pulling them up, the stem comes loose right at the ground level.
I notice in digging, that the soil has more clay than my other raised beds, so possibly it was too wet. I finally see one of the tumeric plants has started to grow. That is such a beauty, I’d grow it just to see the beautiful leaves.
I just purchased a new gardening tool a few weeks ago. Today is the first time I’ve used it. It’s called a Roto-Shovel and it helps me dig holes kind of like a drill. It’s a keeper! I’ve planted a dozen plants today already, in a quarter of the time it usually takes me. It’s available at Walmart, Lowe’s, Home Depot, etc, but I bought mine directly from the owner/inventor at a recent garden show at a much better price than I see online. Y’all should check it out!

Same thing here up by KC. Constant clouds and rain, my yard (about 3/4 of an acre)is turning into a meadow. (No no tractor or sickle bar!)
In a KC suburb, but located on an edge of the bluff. Everything is down from here or everything would be rotting out.
(Augie, are the perch having any problems? Seems like good weather for them! :)
Planted our patio planters this afternoon. Sometime this week hubby will plant the veggie garden.
Bought rhubarb, asparagus and hydroponic tomatoes at the farmer’s market this morning. Rhubarb pie is in the oven.
Oh, and a guy was there selling fresh this morning cheese curds! Yum!
C.J. Well, Get’em used to it young I suppose the names don’t matter.
Rhubarb pie is great! Tomatos on the patio?
I got some Crimson Red from Jung’s this year and hope that with a cool wet summer it survives! (Have some Victoria which has!)
It’s nice today-I’m hoping things get dried out a little.
That’s a cute face all right.
That would be an excellent tool for fall bulb planting - especially if you wanted to ‘naturalize’ various spots in the yard - which I do!
Thanks! Beau never denies me tools, AND I have a summer birthday coming up. He loves it that I’ll shop for myself, LOL! :)
In Wisconsin, blood tests usually come back with a percentage of ‘cheese curd’ built right in. ;)
All the best with your new puppy.
Greeneyes, so am I.
If I wanted to experience this kind of weather I would have moved to Seattle!
