Neither the wounded hiker nor the hunter have been identified. The hiker was in serious condition after being shot, officials said, according to KSDK.

Witnesses told KSDK that they believed the shooting was a freak accident and that hikers sometimes wear bright colors to prevent being mistaken for turkey.

The Missouri Department of Conservation was managing a turkey hunt at the time of the shooting, and a sign near the entrance of the trail stated that the hunt was ongoing until 1 p.m, according to KSDK. Sunday is the final day of turkey hunting season in Missouri.

Any turkey hunters here?

When I was young I went deer hunting with my dad. I heard some rustling and I looked back and saw the most beautiful color purple/blue that I had ever seen before or since.

It was through the bushes before I could identify it so I could not tell what it was. My only guess was a turkey?

The way our cat is killing rabbits of late, I am trying to display no rabbit-like characteristics when in the backyard. Now I will make sure to be as unturkeylike as possible whilst hiking, too.

Autocorrect did not like “unturkeylike” at all.

When I began hunting in my early years, my dad would not let me go out during deer season. He said it was too dangerous. He said a farmer friend of his actually painted the word COW on one of his cows because he was worried some jerk would shoot it. And that was in NJ were you could not hunt deer with rifles, only shot guns and only with buck shot, no rifle slugs.

Most likely a turkey. Their colors are vibrant and they do make a bit of a racket walking and scratching through a leafy area.

I’ve met and worked with lots of “featherless” Turkeys in my life. They are never in season.

Only those that really know the guy can tell you if he was a turkey or not . . .

How tragic.

IN hunter safety course, it was drilled into us that you don’t shoot unless you have CLEARLY identified your target and sure sure there’s nothing behind it.

ALWAYS assume the worst.

-— In Pennsylvania you have “hunters” shooting at cars thinking they are deer. It actually happens.-—

Best keep your John Deere tractor in the barn, then, maybe even with a tarp over it for good measure.

I hike and I avoid any place where I know there’s hunting going on. And I do wear a bright color vest if it’s any season at all…but he may not have known.

And yes, there are some hunters who are too quick on the trigger or too inexperienced. But that’s no reason to blame all of them.

That said, don’t blame the hiker or the shooter. The hiker probably didn’t know any better and I’m sure the guy who shot him is in total misery right now. I don’t like the jeering at either the unfortunate hiker or the unfortunate hunter that I’m seeing right now.

“That said, don’t blame the hiker or the shooter.”

Then blame the gun?

Was he gay? (I’m just trying to judge how much airtime to give it)

I forget what Stste it was, but the turkey tag that they issued was red, white, and blue, and was required to be pinned to your back while hunting.

I didn’t see anywhere in the article that a firearm was involved. People do hunt turkeys with bows and arrows.
