Neither the wounded hiker nor the hunter have been identified. The hiker was in serious condition after being shot, officials said, according to KSDK.
Witnesses told KSDK that they believed the shooting was a freak accident and that hikers sometimes wear bright colors to prevent being mistaken for turkey.
The Missouri Department of Conservation was managing a turkey hunt at the time of the shooting, and a sign near the entrance of the trail stated that the hunt was ongoing until 1 p.m, according to KSDK. Sunday is the final day of turkey hunting season in Missouri.

I don’t think I’m hiking in that area that day at all! I might wait until turkey season is over.
We have gangs of turkeys in our Idaho neighborhood that roost in the trees, then come down to stroll along the roads. They often stop in the roads and refuse to move. Blowing your horn doesn’t faze them one bit.
I got stuck in a “Turkey Jam” a while back. The lady at the head of the line of cars was going to sit there forever until the birds decided to move on. I got fed up and went out and chased them away to get traffic going again. The Missouri hunters would be welcome in our area!

I recall that unusual incident. Circular Turkey Trot. I believe it was close to Halloween, and people had ‘thoughts’ about the meaning.
Some hunters see a flash of color resembling a turkey and point and fire. We educate our children, we educate hunters, and we stress knowing your target. It doesn’t matter as idiots still reflex shoot at movement.
Apparently very little.
Last day or not, you MUST know what you’re shooting by visual identification, unless your on the battlefield giving covering fire.
Years ago, I knew two very good friends. They went turkey hunting. Only one made it out alive. Killed by the other friend, while he was hiding in a bush making gobbler calls.
The shooter spent the rest of his life in deep regret and remorse. Hunting was his passion, but after that, never hunted again. Neither did the other guy.
