I got a good dollop of gasoline in an ear once (turned my head in time to avoid getting it in my eyes). Major pain, plus I was completely deaf in that ear for about two days.

In CA, the pumps have a vapor lock device that has to be retracted for the fuel to flow.
Takes two hands on the nozzle to fill a fuel can, or a motorcycle tank.
Unfortunately, the dangly bits are protected by a layer of pants and, if the perp isn’t going commando, a layer of underwear as well. The face is way more vulnerable.

I grew up with Zippo lighters. Got my first one at 16 when I started smoking. Filled it up nicely and slipped it in my pants pocket.
That burning lesson was learned by many a young man in those days.
We have got the same thing in Washington, but I am able to hold back the vapor lock device with my index and middle finger while holding the nozzle open with my thumb. But it would be hard to aim the nozzle well while doing this.
Drive a manual transmission vehicle. Nobody from the hood can drive them.
