Masterful job by Scotty Kilmer explaining why electric cars are: not green, high pollution, create lots of CO2, cost of battery, and why the current infrastructure cannot support an increase of electric car use
I know a guy that puts a “Friends of Coal” sticker on any Tesla he sees in the parking lot!
Hybrids will be with us for a long time.
The problem with electric cars is the miles of extension cords you have to buy to drive anywhere.
gas powered generator in the trunk
Not to mention the environmental havoc wreaked by mining for battery raw materials.
They’re money pits!
It’s worse than that: They have the support of people who dismiss facts in favor of an emotional reaction.
Example: My wife’s been on a genealogy binge of-late and recently had her DNA tested with some website.
She was excited at getting the results and wanted to share, so I became privy to the details. She was browsing the list of categories that the results ‘predicted’ about her traits. She made some comment of amazement at the results’ accuracy, rationalizing certain categories to fit her personality and other traits.
But I remarked, “It’s a software application.” She asked, “What do you mean?” The answer I didn’t give to her:
It’s no different than social media, and identical to all the other liberal bullet points which provide that emotional response. She’s not stupid, but she’s overwhelmingly wrapped up in emotion over facts.
Just like electric cars do for those people (and some here, apparently).
And those same people will be griping about prices long before the fantasy of ‘saving the planet’ is realized. Hypocrisy is a warm blanket indeed (infested with fleas).
Hes a good mechanic and good at explaining various issues with cars. And comes across as genuine, you’re seeing essentially the real him in his videos.
If they were smart they bring several ddcent solar panels to help out.
Read or watch later.
I have a question-
how did those toy cars charge during the black out...?
These problems are real, but there is one fundamental reason electric cars are coming: they are cheaper.
Electricity is cheaper than gas, and an electric powertrain is simpler than an ICE. At minimum it is very attractive to fleet operators.
Electric cars can work if you live in a city and need to drive relatively short distances.
By 2035, you wont be able to find gas for your beat up Ford F-150 truck. My suggestion is that you’ll have to convert it to propane. It’ll still be legal to buy propane because we can use that for the grill.
If nuclear energy could be brought to bear safely upon electric, the prospects are fine.
Electricity is cheaper than gas mostly because it does not pay the gas taxes.
Given a practical way to store hydrogen without much weight penalty incurred, fuel cells become an option to replace a heavy battery pack and feed the electric power-train. This example resembles the internals of an Eight-Track cassette tape, somewhat modded.
Plasma Kinetics makes light-activated hydrides:
The energy density of hydrogen by weight is about three times that of gasoline or diesel. The efficiency of a conversion system to motive power modifies this ratio somewhat. A bulk hydrogen storage system usually incurs a significant weight penalty. Internal combustion drive-trains involve transmissions plus other weighty components, which add weight.
A kilogram (2.2 pounds) of hydrogen, combined with a modest efficiency fuel cell feeding an electric motor, is equal to an engine performing work burning a gallon (7 pounds) of liquid fuel.
