Three Democratic U.S. senators on Monday said they are introducing legislation that would require U.S. regulators to mandate installation of driver-monitoring systems to ensure motorists pay attention while using systems like Tesla's Autopilot.
Senators Ed Markey, Richard Blumenthal and Amy Klobuchar introduced the measure on Monday, saying they hope to get it included as part of infrastructure reform legislation. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened 28 probes into Tesla crashes to date, with 24 pending, where Autopilot was suspected of being in use.
The measure also requires the agency "to study how driver-monitoring systems can prevent driver distraction, driver disengagement, automation complacency, and the foreseeable misuse of advanced driver-assist systems."
...Last week, Consumer Reports said its engineers were able to operate a Tesla vehicle without anyone in the driver's seat, and the system failed to send out a warning or indicate that the driver's seat was empty...
Blumenthal and Markey are also introducing separate measures to boost completion rates of auto safety recalls, require automakers to publicly disclose more early-warning defect information and set new motor vehicle seat safety standards.

We need to install Senator monitoring systems to see which groups these senators are taking “campaign contributions” (ie. bribes) from.

Too bad it wasn’t Hirono instead of Klobuchar, then it would have been a hat trick of the dumbest living Senators.
some people are too busy running around like chicken little screeching “we’re all gonna die” while other people are too busy arguing about the kung flu vaccine to notice what is really happening...
<>With these government mandates for auto manufacturers to install spyware on vehicle<>
WE HAVE A WINNER!
Spyware/tracking as as an unadvertised feature.
There is a company that is making an alternative for Tesla’s Autopilot for cars equipped with adaptive cruise control and lane assist. It uses a cell phone’s cameras (not your cell phone, one comes with the kit) to monitor the road ahead as well as the driver’s eyes. If your eyes aren’t on the road or closed, it issues a warning. I would think Tesla could add this capability with little effort.
Pricing us out of driving ...I don’t like spending more than 1500 on usually 90s vehicles. Works for me...but they’ll take that away soon to be sure
Ban the Tesla fully-automatic assault car! /Sarc
Certainly by 2035 or thereabouts when the gas stations start to shutdown if Biden & the Democrats have their way. Your ‘90’s classic’ will become a planter.
We just bought a new XXXXXX which has adaptive cruise control, lane keeping, automatic braking, etc.... I turned it all off - it’s dangerous and adds $4k to $6k to the price of the car (and adds a lot of reliability issues). The car is comfortable, has a great driving position, is quiet and has reasonable performance. Wish I could have bought the same car without all the electronics and crap that is useless.
PS: I did not activate the “free” SOS, personal profile, and wireless connect system - they already track me by cellphone.
Traffic tickets issued to you by your vehicle.

Many insurance companies already fine you.
For such legal things as driving after 8pm, braking hard.
People should just rear-end the car that just slammed on its brakes or hit the kid that darted into the street?
That’s a world class combover!
I’ll probably be dead, but if not we might be moonshining to make some alky for the old buggy....
Typical of most devices. Guess these knuckleheads in Congress want to mandate something similar. Look at the last three....
“The telematics device that Progressive uses for the Snapshot program collects the following data:
Braking: The system looks for instances of hard-braking (braking/stopping suddenly or quickly).
Acceleration: The device records instances of quick acceleration.
Time of day: The device records when you drive, specifically the time of day that you’re on the road.
Mileage: The device records the length of each trip to accurately determine how many miles you regularly drive.
Trip frequency: How often you drive your car will also be recorded.
Location: The device includes a GPS to locate your vehicle.”
Gassers can switch to moonshine with the right carb jets or injector mapping.
If you’re gonna drive a lot of miles, yes.
So if this is really gonna happen, having a flexfuel capable vehicle would be valuable.
I’m pretty confident I’ll be dead before gasoline is phased out.
