We just bought a new XXXXXX which has adaptive cruise control, lane keeping, automatic braking, etc.... I turned it all off - it’s dangerous and adds $4k to $6k to the price of the car (and adds a lot of reliability issues). The car is comfortable, has a great driving position, is quiet and has reasonable performance. Wish I could have bought the same car without all the electronics and crap that is useless.

Of course everyone’s opinion is going to differ, but my reaction to the new technology was the opposite to yours. I was gobsmacked when my Honda CRV was taking the corners on the Interstate for me. Car in front slows down, my car slows down. Car in front stops, my car stops. Makes a long drive on the Interstate much easier.

Now, do I trust it? Of course not. Do I take my hands off of the wheel or tuck my feet under me while driving (like I could!), don’t be daft. Right now, cars are maybe 60% of the way to being self-driving. But it’s the easy 60% Don’t know if they’ll get to the last 40%.

I have read, that the older one is (and I’m older than I’ve ever been in my life) the less trust one puts into the tech. I’ve seen videos of guys letting their cars pretty much drive themselves with their arms folded. Crazy.

And, as you’ve said, you can always (for now at least) turn the tech off.
