Archaeologists confirmed the find in late 2019 but only announced the news now due to delays caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

When I first moved to Maryland we looked at a house to buy that was owned by one of Lord Calvert’s kid.

The basement was just dirt and a few bricks on the floor and the wiring was cloth coated.

As much as I love history, that was too much.

Interesting! Thank you! Our daughter went to St Mary’s College for a bit. We LOVED driving down there. Beautiful campus.

Trivia: Clare Booth Luce (2nd wife of Henry Luce, who was co-founder of Time magazine) had ancestors from the Dove which landed at St Mary’s in 1640(?).

I always found it ironic that the members of that ship had left to escape religious persecution and wanted to establish a colony free of any religious holdings...and immediately named their community “St Mary’s”. :)

Believe it or not, it isn’t a Freak State PING! Just a good historical/archeological interest story of our earlier roots. And I do love our local history.

As I recall, 1634 is considered the year of Maryland’s founding.

Why is “indigenous” capitalized? I guess it’s like “black”. I do prefer the word compared to that stupid insulting phrase “Native American”, but don’t capitalize it.

Anyway, this is very cool. Maybe someday we’ll be allowed to visit again and see this progress.
