Why You Should No Longer Worry About Cholesterol in Food ... Genetics appear to play a stronger role in heart disease

High levels of “bad” cholesterol in the blood, which have been linked to heart disease, are still a health concern.

But evidence shows people no longer have to be concerned about eating foods that are high in cholesterol. What’s changed is that many researchers and physicians believe that eating cholesterol-rich foods such as eggs may not affect the cholesterol that is in your blood.

“However, people with certain health problems, such as diabetes, should continue to avoid cholesterol-rich foods,” says cardiologist Steven Nissen, MD.

It’s complicated Is cholesterol good for you? Is cholesterol bad for you? It’s complicated.

Cholesterol is a waxy substance that ultimately ends up in the walls of arteries. It causes the plaque that lead to heart attacks and strokes. The U.S. Dietary Guidelines call for a daily cholesterol limit of 300 milligrams.

The relationship between cholesterol and the body is extremely complicated. Some of the ways its complicated are:

The body regulates how much cholesterol is in your blood.

There’s different kinds of cholesterol. Low-density lipoprotein or LDL (bad) cholesterol contributes to plaque buildup along with triglycerides, another lipid.

High-density lipoprotein or HDL (good) cholesterol discourages plaque buildup.

LDL is the bad cholesterol that you should avoid because it can increase your risk of heart disease. The way people process cholesterol differs. Some people appear to be more vulnerable to cholesterol-rich diets.

“Your genetic makeup – not diet – is the driving force behind cholesterol levels, says Dr. Nissen. “The body creates cholesterol in amounts much larger than what you can eat, so avoiding foods that are high in cholesterol won’t affect your blood cholesterol levels very much.”

About 85% of the cholesterol in the circulation is manufactured by the body in the liver. It isn’t coming directly from the cholesterol that you eat, according to Dr. Nissen.

It’s also likely that people with family history of heart disease share common environments that may increase their risk, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

What you should worry about Should you actually worry about cholesterol in food? The greater danger for everyone is in foods that are high in trans fats.

“Those often appear on food labels as hydrogenated oils or partially hydrogenated vegetable oil,” he says. “Those types of fats do tend to raise cholesterol and do tend to increase the risk of heart disease.”

All in all, look for trans fat and saturated fat on labels at the grocery store. The American Heart Association recommends limiting dietary saturated fat intake and focusing more on eating fruits, veggies, whole grains, lean animal protein or plant protein sources.

How many people have gotten dementia from statins?
Neurological side effects:

From their package inserts:

The FDA warns on statin labels that some people have developed memory loss or confusion while taking statins. These side effects reverse once you stop taking the medication. There is limited evidence to prove a cause-effect relationship, but talk to your doctor if you experience memory loss or confusion while taking statins.

So you saw the most dramatic changes via diet?
I am about 15-20 overweight for my age but decided to focus first on consistent movement-
1-2 mile daily alk (Big German Shep) Peleton & Pilates as my joints suck.
But truly I do not eat that much but when I do it might be half a burger, bacon/eggs, mexican food.
That is veeeery interesting....my husband had a stroke (actually 2 one in the eye) and had surgery to unclog him Carotid artery in Nov. The doctors put him on a statin just to cover the checklist but his CH readings were not bad at all.

Possible Link Between Some Statins and Parkinson’s

But the connection was only seen with certain types of the cholesterol-lowering drugs

FROM THE WEBMD ARCHIVES
By Amy Norton

HealthDay Reporter

TUESDAY, June 20, 2017 (HealthDay News) — People on cholesterol-lowering statins may have a slightly increased risk of developing Parkinson’s disease, a new study suggests.

Researchers said the finding doesn’t prove statins are to blame. But, they added, the findings undercut the notion that statins might help protect against Parkinson’s.

Where does that idea come from? Past research has shown that people with high cholesterol tend to have a lower risk of Parkinson’s, explained Dr. Xuemei Huang, a professor of neurology at Penn State College of Medicine.

Caution (from the article):

“The way people process cholesterol differs. Some people appear to be more vulnerable to cholesterol-rich diets.”

Maybe most people don’t need to watch diet, but those with a problem do.

Family history of heart disease might be a good indicator.

What is the function of cholesterol in your arteries? - Sharecarewww.sharecare.com › ... › High Cholesterol › Cholesterol

Cholesterol functions in your arteries as part of the repair process that takes place when an artery is injured through wear and tear. In the repair process a cholesterol plaque develops over the injured part of the artery. The only problem is that if too much plaque develops your artery can become occluded.

And if I get the mRna vaccine shot, I can change my DNA. Better living through genetic manipulation! What could possibly go wrong?

It would be best not to try to get pregnant after your mRNA shot.

Cholesterol is a major building block of testosterone.

So we are rxed a statin which blocks production of testosterone.

Then, we need an Rx for Viagra or Cialis.

Yeah, at least according to the blood tests. Just cut sugar and carbs down to 25 net grams a day. I actually started the Keto again about 6 weeks ago. I consume no sugar, but there are some carbs in the few snacks I allow myself e.g. mixed nuts and some sauces and dressings. Keto and Atkins are basically the same thing but Keto tends to stress more fat and where Atkins more protein. Otherwise almost identical diets. Because of my heart health concerns I just have an aversion to fattier foods so lots of chicken, turkey, steaks and fish and avoid the fattier meats. But for diet purposes heart health aside it shouldn’t matter much at all.

I was specifically told I should not run or jog for exercise. I have 3 stents in my artery. All other activity fine. Anyway I hate running so no big deal.

Bike for 20 minutes, treadmill for 10 minutes. Check BP before exercise, then right after exercise, 5 minutes of breathing exercises (basically inhale for 5-6 seconds, and exhale for 7-9 seconds per breath) and then check BP again.
The third readout usually shows a lower number than the first, which I credit mainly to the breathing exercise which is intended to lower BP. In any case my BP is in normal range but I do take BP meds because of the stents.

But they closed the gym due to covid, so thanks! Now they are open again, but 10% capacity which means basically nobody can get in anyway.

As an aside, I read recently about weight changes during the lockdown. There were dramatic shifts in both directions but not surprisingly about 2x as many people gained weight vs losing weight. And worse of all, the average weight gain during covid was around 30 pounds across all age groups, genders, marital status etc. Slightly less for younger people and slightly more for parents. Snack food, alcohol, netflix and a couch for 13 months will do that. I was surprised though that about 20% of people reported an average weight loss of 20 pounds during lockdown. I attribute that to stress but maybe also people budgeting food expenses. These are “unwanted weight changes” not people who actually tried to gain or lose weight.

The unintended consequences of the lockdown will be severe. Undiagnosed conditions left to fester because people don’t want to go to see doctors. Obesity, diabetes etc. Alcohol and drug abuse. Even when we eradicate the virus the health consequences will linger for many years.

This information is several years old.

Our bodies need 1,000 - 1,500 mg of cholesterol a day. If we don’t get it from food, we have to make it.

The death rate goes up for sodium intakes below 3,000 mg and above 7,000 mg a day.

You want 3,000 - 7,000 mg a day to be healthy.

Well said, except that olive and coconut are technically vegetable oils, too.

The people that are living longer are us old folks (I'm 77) who had meat and potatoes and salad every day, drank whole milk and got plenty of exercise and fresh air.

We started working young and busted our buns until retired.

What we didn't have?? Snacks and soda.

For people who don’t know the OFFICIAL recommendation from the ‘experts’ is 2300 mg, but what you have above is what the data says. Then ideal level is 4500 mg, for sodium.

...interesting how that works. No different with saturated fat or cholesterol.

I think I would want to know why I’m paying for less results and would still want to keep an eye on it. Could be cost cutting measures.

Oils that are called “vegetable” oils are actually seed oils; olive oil comes from the olive flesh (not the seed) and coconut oil comes from the coconut meat.
