Not since the 1970s has there been such an important discovery from the Great War in France. In woods on a ridge not far from the city of Reims, the bodies of more than 270 German soldiers have lain for more than a century - after they died the most agonising deaths imaginable. On 4 May 1917 the French launched an artillery bombardment targeting the two ends of the tunnel, sending up an observation balloon to get a sight on the north-facing slope.
For once their accuracy was formidable. A shell fired from a naval gun hit the entrance, triggering more explosions from ammunition that was stored there and sending a cloud of acrid fumes into the shaft. Another shell sealed the exit.
Inside, the men from the 10th and 11th companies of the 111th Reserve Regiment were trapped. Over the next six days, as oxygen ran out, they either suffocated or took their own lives. Some asked comrades to kill them.

I have a ~1905 broomhandle that’s been thru the mill. Exported to a French sporting goods store sometime. Matching, but no case/stock or holster. I always wonder whether it was used in wartime.
I always wonder whether it was used in wartime.>
That’s how the cases got lost.
You have ammo? Rich guy, huh!?
Frankly, what was the difference between Germany, France and Britain then? None of them were saints. Why was it the US business? And don’t bring up the Zimmerman Note. Germany had no presence in the Americas, unlike Britain and France.
EOD is another public safety 1st responder crew like police, fire and EMS in many European cities/locales. For good reason.
It’s awkward to fire without a stock. Lugers would be more fun to find, but are out of my price range.
My grandfather who was in the Secret Service went to Mexico to investigate the situation regarding the Zimmerman letter. I would bet that were here alive today he would disagree with you.
“The start of the decline of Western Civilization.
Agree 100%....World War II was merely piling on.”

Sigh...and, Hitler was such a nice chap, who if only left alone would have brought everlasting peace to the world.
I wouldn't go near it, being a superstitious Irishman.
I went to the Imperial war museum many years ago. I would like to go back someday.
IWM Duxford in Cambridge was my favorite museum there. It was fun to look at the airplanes in the museum and when I was there a Me 109 was practicing its airshow routine above. I donated $20 to the American air museum there and shortly after ended up on the AARP mailing list. I found it funny I was in my 20’s and getting AARP mail! It would be appropriate now. Ha ha.
Thanks for sharing. My great-uncle served with the 38th Battalion (Ottawa) of the Canadian Expeditionary Forces in France during WWI. He was killed two months before the Armistice, on the Arras-Cambrai Road near the village of Cambrai, which is approximately 71 miles from Craonne. He’s buried in a British Military Cemetery in Wimile, Pas-de-Calais.
WW2 was caused by WW1 and the treaty they imposed.
“wouldn’t go near it”
Ya. Too many horror movies start out that way.
“But the results of the WWI with Germany losing sure led to a lot of bad stuff.”
And if Germany hadn’t been punished so much after WWI, Hitler may not have rose to power.
It is pretty amazing how we (USA, Brits, France, etc.) were able to deal with Germany and Japan after the war and we now have good relations. The Soviet way of dealing with the aftermath sucked.
What a horrible way to die. All war is horrible, but that war was particularly gruesome with little break from the trenches.
It’s the law of the sea. Gear adrift.

Unlocked footlocker. If it wasn’t for people like that there wouldn’t be any thievery in the world!
Yeah. Proved Jefferson right on the Washington Doctrine of Unstable Alliances.
That is pretty cool. I hope it has all been secured.
And WW1 was a result of the Ranco-Prussiann war, which was revenge for the Napoleonic wars, which came about because of the English, French colonial wars which were the successors to the Spanish colonial wars which were a reaction the the muslims invading Spain and Byzantium and disrupting trade routes that had existed some Roman times.
So, you can blame it all on Muslims.
My Great Grandfather would agree with you.
