Iconic Downtown Santa Cruz Movie Theater Closing: Report The Regal-operated theater notified employees that it was closing for good, Lookout Santa Cruz reported. Courtney Teague's profile picture Courtney Teague, Patch Staff Verified Patch Staff Badge Posted Thu, Feb 18, 2021 at 2:17 pm PT

Replies (2) The theater is located at 1405 Pacific Ave. The theater is located at 1405 Pacific Ave. (Google Maps) SANTA CRUZ, CA — Regal's Santa Cruz Cinema 9 will close its doors for good, Lookout Santa Cruz reported.

While Patch has not been able to reach a spokesperson for Regal, a review of the company's website shows the Santa Cruz location at 1405 Pacific St. is not listed among its California theaters.

Workers were given the opportunity to transfer to other Regal-operated theaters, Lookout Santa Cruz reported.

The news comes nearly a year after California enacted restrictions on businesses in an attempt to curb the spread of the coronavirus. Those restrictions have spelled devastation for many movie theaters and entertainment venues across the Golden State.

Like most other California counties, Santa Cruz County movie theaters may only operate outdoor. That's because the county is in the most-strict purple tier of California's four-tiered, color-coded COVID-19 risk assessment system.

Subscribe Movie theaters may reopen to serve 100 people or up to 25 percent of maximum capacity — whichever is less — when Santa Cruz County is placed into the red tier. Those restrictions lessen with each tier.

Regal temporarily closed all 543 of its American theaters in October, citing staggering losses brought on by the coronavirus pandemic. AMC Theatres, another large national movie theater chain, narrowly avoided imminent bankruptcy after receiving a nearly $920 cash million infusion from investors last month, CBS News reported.

Cinema 9 first opened in 1995 in an attempt to draw people back to the city's downtown in the wake of the Loma Preita Earthquake, Lookout Santa Cruz reported.

Downtown movie mainstay Cinema 9 to close permanently, Regal tells staff

Alleged loss of Regal 9 Cinema could affect neighboring businesses

There are two other movie theater's in downtown Santa Cruz. One has three screens, but is tiny, almost like a news real theater. The other plays a mix of art house, non art house, and other specialty movies. (Including those film plays from National Theatre Live)

Is any architecture from 1995 “iconic”?

It is still a multiplex.

The days of indoor movie theaters are coming to an end. It is just a matter of time.

Actually, movie industry people have been thinking about this for a while - totally unrelated to the pandemic. Notice what films gross the most? Usually action films based on comic books with lots of special effects. With so many ways to get a movie delivered to your inexpensive screen at home the days of theaters were already coming to an end. One idea floated by the big names like Spielberg is to create more spectacle around individual films - not just on the screen but the entire experience - to give them more longevity in the theaters.

“days of indoor movie theaters are coming to an end”

I’ve got a million dollar idea. Outdoor movies that you just sit in your car, watch a giant screen and the audio plays over your radio...IM GONNA BE RICH!!!

😂

I saw Animal House, Friday the 13th there and so many other movies there...

I had tested out of high school and enrolled in college the year before and was dating “older women “ taking them to this theater.

Pacific Mall holds so many memories for me...

Santa Cruz had a drive in until the last few years. San Jose still has them.

Yeah the Regal 20 theater down the road from me just did a header. I think Regal is downsizing or just plain old went bankrupt.

Not sure movie theatres will be ending, there is still something special about the “Big Screen” experience that is not the same as watching on your home TV, and as far as cost it is still relatively cheap entertainment at $13

Movie theater chain permanently closing its Maine locations
CBS 13

All Cinemagic movie theaters in Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts are closing their doors for good after more than 20 years.

“To the thousands of ‘Cinemagicians’ who have joined us in providing the magic of movies on the big screen over the past two decades and the generations of movie goers who we have served, we thank you for being part of our family. It has been an honor and a privilege to provide our communities with the magic of cinema,” said Zyacorp Entertainment in a press release. Zyacorp Entertainment operated the Cinemagic theaters.

Earlier this month, Cinemagic said it was only temporarily closing until spring amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Cinemagic has movie theaters in Westbrook, South Portland and Saco; Portsmouth, Hooksett and Merrimack, New Hampshire; and Salisbury and Sturbridge, Massachusetts.

Movie theaters have been struggling with the lack of new releases from Hollywood due to the pandemic.

Another chain, Smitty’s closed their three locations in Maine last spring. Smittys was a restaurant and theater.
