Tensions flared at the Indiana Statehouse Thursday when Republican lawmakers shouted down and booed Black lawmakers during floor debate on a bill that some see as discriminatory.
Rep. Greg Porter, D-Indianapolis, walked off the House floor after several Republican lawmakers loudly objected to his warnings of discrimination in House Bill 1367. Porter, a member of the Black caucus, said the bill would allow students in a St. Joseph County township to leave the South Bend Community Schools, which are racially diverse, to join a nearby school district that's smaller, more rural and made up primarily of white students.
Republicans deny the bill is discriminatory. The bill's author, Rep. Jake Teshka, R-South Bend, said it's about transportation issues.

After Porter walked off the House floor overcome with emotion, Rep. Vernon Smith, D-Gary, reiterated concerns about discrimination and spoke about his own experiences facing discrimination as a Black man, being pulled over for "driving while Black" and being denied access to certain places because of the color of his skin. He was met with "boos" from several other GOP lawmakers.
Rep. Jim Lucas, R-Seymour, then walked out over his objections to Smith's testimony.
Lucas declined to answer questions about what happened, other than to criticize media reports as inaccurate without saying specifically why.

I’m gonna go watch “A Yank In the RAF” again. I know...I’m a worm.
I was a student in a (what once was) a rural community that had to undergo forced “desegregation” where they bused in kids from the cities out to us starting with my Jr. High year (now middle school)
Before the busing the school campuses were open - before class and during lunch I could go to the bookstore (staffed by students) or to the school’s library which were situated next to the cafeteria. Seating was open.
Within 2 years the Jr. High was completely locked down and seats were assigned in the cafeteria.
By the time I got to the high school (which used to allow eating lunch on the green areas or even LEAVING SCHOOL during lunch to grab a bite at the local burger places) - they had already locked down and then continued to further restrict our liberties and freedoms until we effectively were being educated in a prison.
The bused in kids didn’t WANT to be there either as busing times were nearly hour long commutes plus it made extra curricular activities difficult for them to get to and from outside of busing. So they didn’t integrate that way, either. Of course in things like band, they could easily get out of practices without punishment - of course those of us who lived in the area HAD to appear or be punished.
It was just bad all around.
Totally bad. And yes, it’s true that the bussed in kids didn’t like it either. But of course, nobody really cared about what was best for the kids, white or black. It was all political posturing.
And 100% of judges, who are also exclusively female.
“Going by the TV commercials I see, the US population is 50-60% black.”
And every black female is married to a white DOOFUS of a husband, who couldn’t fight his way out of a wet paper bag - and, yet, she has 2.3 children with him!
And they’re usually driving really fancy cars, doing things that most of us never have the opportunity to do. ;)
I noticed that also. Just about every commercial is a bi-racial couple. Even the little kids shows have them more and more. I doubt really have a problem with it in the scheme if things but I don’t like the subliminal programming they are doing.
“subliminal programming”
Exactly.
No, thanks. We’re still trying to force Chicago to secede into its own state, but it won’t let go of the tit that is the rest of IL.
dark skinned democrats are the most racist.
..........................................
Actually it may be the light skinned democrats who are most racist!.
Going by the TV commercials I see, the US population is 50-60% black.
.................................................
Only 50-60%?
Exactly right! I’m over it, they have beat this to death, I don’t think many conservatives give a rats butt anymore about being called racist
government factories create government widgets.
Bkmk
The “black” man tried to place the race card, and the GOP reps knew the bill had zero to do with “race”.
