Republicans shout down and boo Black colleagues who speak about discrimination on House floor

Tensions flared at the Indiana Statehouse Thursday when Republican lawmakers shouted down and booed Black lawmakers during floor debate on a bill that some see as discriminatory.

Rep. Greg Porter, D-Indianapolis, walked off the House floor after several Republican lawmakers loudly objected to his warnings of discrimination in House Bill 1367. Porter, a member of the Black caucus, said the bill would allow students in a St. Joseph County township to leave the South Bend Community Schools, which are racially diverse, to join a nearby school district that's smaller, more rural and made up primarily of white students.

Republicans deny the bill is discriminatory. The bill's author, Rep. Jake Teshka, R-South Bend, said it's about transportation issues.

After Porter walked off the House floor overcome with emotion, Rep. Vernon Smith, D-Gary, reiterated concerns about discrimination and spoke about his own experiences facing discrimination as a Black man, being pulled over for "driving while Black" and being denied access to certain places because of the color of his skin. He was met with "boos" from several other GOP lawmakers.

Rep. Jim Lucas, R-Seymour, then walked out over his objections to Smith's testimony.

Lucas declined to answer questions about what happened, other than to criticize media reports as inaccurate without saying specifically why.

The exchange ended when Rep. Bob Morris, R-Fort Wayne, dragged Eberhart into a men's restroom and Summers was escorted down the hall by members of the Democratic caucus.

Cage match.

“”Everybody over there is racist and discriminatory,” Summers said, of House Republicans. “Those that aren’t and are not standing up for what’s right, they’ve got white privilege and they’re racist too.”

uh-huh.

this is getting very VERY little discussion in the local media other than the OMGZ -der GOP is teh RACISS!

No talk about the bill or where all this hate speech from the dems are coming from - just that the white evil GOP decepticons boo’d the heroic black autobots in the statehouse.

When EVERYTHING is ‘racist,’ NOTHING is ‘racist.’

its not because of race blacks are self perceiving they are ‘lacking’ anything

if you dont spend time studying, you wont get the same results as people who study

you also wont get jobs that require better educated people

if you dont work as hard as others you won’t make as much

no one is rebuking the mantra its about systemic racism

its not

its about a culture that no longer values personal education and personal betterment

personal betterment helps the individual and the society that person belongs to

Weird. That said, busing and the breakup of local schools was one of the worst ideas ever. It added to tensions rather than reducing them.

But it wasn’t really about race. I worked in a public school in San Francisco that was in a middle class white area, and then suddenly they began busing in black children from one of the worst, most depressed areas of the city. These kids immediately set to beating up and robbing the white kids on the playground, even under the eyes of the teachers. So the white parents then began withdrawing their kids and sending them to private schools.

But one of the black teachers I worked with said the very truth: it wasn’t about race, it was simply that you couldn’t possibly put kids who were from single mother, almost-illiterate, drug-infested homes, were surrounded by crime and survived by being violent, into a normal middle class environment.

This was true, because while most of the kids from the neighborhood were white, there were some black students...who were often the focus of attacks by the bused in blacks, because they were considered “soft” and “wanting to be white.” They actually just wanted to work hard, get good grades, get into college and live a good life, but that was outside the scope of the bused-in group.

So in my teacher friend’s opinion, it was a cultural clash where the under-class meets the rest of the world, not about race. And she was absolutely right.

I don’t believe it either.

Uh that sh!t might go over in New York or California but not so much in Indiana. Truth be told if we could somehow move Gary over to Illinois, Indiana would be considerably better off and the Land of Lincoln wouldn’t know the difference.

So once again, Democrats oppose desegregation, oppose busing, oppose white schools getting black students... and this time they say it is racist to bus black kids to white schools.

History is amazing.

12% of the population. They get 12% of everything. It’s the only way to be fair.

So resolving a transportation issue is racist? So White kids should be forced to be in the racially diverse schools because resolving a transportation issue would allow more of the White kids to go to less diverse schools (outcome)?

DANG!

Do the parents in the white school district get a say in whether they want black kids buses in? Of course not.

12% of the population.

You are obviously making this up. Going by the TV commercials I see, the US population is 50-60% black.
