Why does the US support Israel? What benefit does the US get out of this alliance? Originally Answered: Why is Israel receiving tons of aid from the U.S.?

>“Tons of aid”? Please read this before you repeat that statement:

Myth: Israel Is the Largest Beneficiary of US Military Aid

The aid that Israel does receive has strings attached to it that no other recipient has, such as the requirement that a minimum of 75% of the aid must be spent on US-made equipment. The remaining 25% may be used on non-US-made equipment only with US government approval. (This will increase until the figure is 100% by the end of the period of the current MOU.)

US-made equipment that has become obsolete or obsolescent and is to be replaced by the IDF may be sold onward only with the approval of the US government, even if most of the original US systems were replaced with different, more effective and efficient Israeli systems.

Much of Israel’s military R&D is provided to the US military (I’ve translated many of the installation, maintenance and user manuals from Hebrew to English myself over the past 20 years).

Intelligence not available to western intelligence agencies is often shared with the US, depending on the context. Not all time-sensitive information or information pertinent to Israel and not to the US is shared.

In short, the US gets a better quid-pro-quo for the aid it provides Israel than it does from any other recipient.

Yet another iteration to this question, which is clearly one of the most commonly asked on Quora:

Why does the US give ‘financial support’ for Israel?

The US government has decided that spending in excess of $120 billion per year to promote its geopolitical goals is worth it. And the $3 billion of credits that is given to Israel against purchase of US military hardware is chump change compared to what it actually spends on other allies.

David Vine, a professor at American University, states in Base Nation: How U.S. Military Bases Abroad Harm America and the World that there are 150,500 American troops stationed in seventy countries around the globe. The cost estimate to the American taxpayer annually is at least $85-100 billion. Once the real costs are calculated, the largest aid recipient is Japan, where 48,828 US military personnel are stationed. This translates into a US military aid package of over $27 billion. Germany, with 37,704 US troops on its soil, receives aid equivalent to around $21 billion; South Korea, with 27,553 US troops, receives over $15 billion; and Italy receives at least $6 billion.

What does the US government get from those credits?

While the Israel-haters would like to present the US military aid package as some kind of ‘no strings attached’ gift, the reality is more of an exchange of goods and services, as well as the fulfillment of promises made by the US in peace treaties.

Containment of Soviet/Russian Influence

One telling point is that the US did not support Israel militarily until after 1967, and economically perhaps not until the 1980’s. The Cold War dominated US geopolitics, spurring endless operations to contain Soviet influence in nearly every corner of the globe. Only when Israel proved itself as a worthwhile adversary to the Soviet client states that surrounded it in 1967 did the US support begin.Although the Cold War is over, in many ways the US behavior towards Russia is similar to that of the USSR. In the following chart, note how the nations who receive the most US aid are adjacent to Russia and her allies (Syria, Iran, Hizbullah).

United States foreign aid - Wikipedia

A US aircraft carrier in a troubled region

Israel exists in a highly strategic and yet highly unstable region. And even the most ardent Israel-hater must agree that Israel can be counted upon as a reliable US ally. US Secretary of State Alexander Haig likened Israel to “the largest American aircraft carrier in the world that cannot be sunk, does not carry even one American soldier, and is located in a critical region for American national security.” It could be added that this ‘aircraft carrier’ does not cost nearly as much as the floating variety (carriers are hugely expensive to build and maintain). It could and perhaps should also be noted that the US does now operate a very small base in Israel, with about 100 personnel. Israel philosophically finds it distasteful to have a foreign base on its soil, but the size and benefits of this mini-base were enough for it to make this one exception.

The cost of maintaining a US military presence in Germany and Japan, very wealthy nations which exist in much less volatile or strategic regions, is estimated to cost US taxpayers at least $20 billion per year for each nation. Israel is quite a bargain in comparison.

Balance of military aid

US provides economic and military aid to several nations who exhibit lukewarm acceptance of Israel’s existence if not outright hostility. Israel’s immediate neighbors figure large on the list of US aid, as do the terror centers of Pakistan and Afghanistan. The Camp David Accords, which provides many geopolitical benefits to the US, promised Egypt substantial economic and military aid. If one wants to be seen as fair and balanced, equal assistance must be given to both sides.

Camp David Accords - Wikipedia

Furthermore, US has sold advanced military hardware worth tens of billions of dollars to wealthy Arab petro-states who have regularly demanded Israel’s destruction in the past. If you want to make the sale and yet keep Israel as an ally, you have to provide some reciprocity.

Boost domestic defense industry

With new Obama regulations, 100% of US aid to Israel is spent on buying equipment from the US. This is distinctly in contrast to US military spending in Germany and Japan, for example. In those nations much of the military budget is spent locally, aiding the local economy much more than that of the US.

Control of the sale of Israeli weaponry to US rivals

Israeli high tech weaponry is valued throughout the world, and sought after by many nations, including some which are not exactly friendly to US interests. To exert this specific influence over Israel, which also affects Israeli GDP, some incentive must be provided by the US.

US acts over Israeli arms sales to China

Intelligence Sharing

A recent Trump scandal in the last few months revealed a bit of the reliance of the US intelligence community on the Mossad. Trump revealed to Russia some details of a Mossad operation whereby Israeli agents penetrated Islamic State and discovered their plan to plant bombs in laptop computers taken onboard commercial aircraft bound for the US.

It is clear that the US relies on Mossad for access to crucial information, and this has been the case for decades. George Keagan, former head of U.S. Air Force Intelligence, said that “Israel is worth five CIAs.”

Is Israel an asset or a burden to our country?

Application to a recent news item: when an Israeli F16 was shot down by a barrage of Syrian anti-aircraft missiles, the details of that confrontation is of huge importance to the US military. The US can expect to get extensive details that will help plan future potential interactions with Russian developed systems.

Joint military hardware development

Israel has a unique position in its cooperation with the US on development of military hardware. Many projects, such as the Arrow missile, are developed together to the advantage and cost savings of both.

Arrow (Israeli missile) - Wikipedia

Furthermore, Israel is a significant test bed for US military hardware. It was mostly Israeli-flown but US-built F-15 fighter jets that accrued the F-15’s enviable record.

From McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle - Wikipedia:

“The first kill by an F-15 was scored by Israeli Air Force ace Moshe Melnik in 1979.[57]…F-15As reportedly downed 13 Syrian MiG-21s and two Syrian MiG-25s. Israeli F-15As and Bs participated as escorts in Operation Opera, an air strike on an Iraqi nuclear reactor. In the 1982 Lebanon War, Israeli F-15s were credited with 41 Syrian aircraft destroyed (23 MiG-21s and 17 MiG-23s, and one Aérospatiale SA.342L Gazelle helicopter). During Operation Mole Cricket 19, Israeli F-15s and F-16s together shot down 82 Syrian fighter aircraft (MiG-21s, MiG-23s, and MiG-23Ms) with no losses.[58]

Furthermore, much information about the latest Soviet technologies were received during Israel’s many wars to defend its existence.

Safe Storage

Israel is the only truly reliable location in the region for the storage of US military hardware if US needed to get that material to a nearby theatre of operation quickly.

Defending Shipping Lanes

Arguably one of the most important roles for the sole global superpower is to maintain the safety of the world’s shipping lanes. Much of what can be said in praise of Pax Romana and Pax Britannia was their defense of trade routes, and the increase in global wealth because of that. In this regard, Israel is a great help to the US, considering its location near to the Horn of Africa and one of the most notorious shipping bottlenecks accessed by Somali pirates.

Omnipotent AIPAC lobbyists?

In spite of all of this, Israel haters love to single out AIPAC as having immense influence in Washington. Even though it is clear that AIPAC is hardly the most powerful lobby for a foreign nation in Washington, we could also look to the success of AIPAC in lobbying congress to vote against Obama’s Iran deal. AIPAC failed completely. Omnipotent? Perhaps not.

Here is a list of the funding of foreign lobbyists:

Foreign Lobby Watch

“In 2010, foreign governments spent approximately $460 million on lobbying Congress and the U.S. Government.[162] Between 2015–2017, the Saudi Arabia paid $18 million to 145 registered lobbyists to influence the U.S. government.[163]”

From: Lobbying in the United States - Wikipedia

Where is the outrage about South Korea and Japan, who spend far more than Israel in lobbying the US government?

But even foreign nations pale in comparison to the top lobbyist groups:

“Tons of aid” Fact checkers weighed the aid and it did not even come to 1 ton let alone multiple which could be called tons. This is False. (This would be a fact check if Trump had said this.)

To which I’d add: Over the years Israel has been attacked by its neighbors numerous times. It is the duty of America to help countries in that unfortunate position.

Israel is God’s land.. As long as we have a President who knows what the Bible says about Israel.. we are allies... when anti God in the US have their way.. we are supposed to hate Israel.

it goes back to who the favorite son is.. God said Isaac.. Muslims say Ishmael. We are to love what God loves.. and prophecy was filled when Israel became a state in 1948..

Simple answer: Only Democracy-like Middle Eastern state, and the US has always been about spreading freedom, individualism and Democracy. Anyone questioning otherwise is likely anti-Israel, a Leftist POS, or anti-Semitic.

Which falsity the answer affirms.

(This would be a fact check if Trump had said this.)

This is also true.

True, as seen by some of the contrary answers to the question.

And an honest liberal would have to admit that if Israel was a majority LGBTQ country that was threatened by Russia then they were be protesting for support of Israel. However, as Pilate and Herod became friends (Luke 23:12) since they both opposed to the Lord Jesus so also liberals are allies with Islam due to having the God of the Bible as their shared common enemy.

And we have a foretaste already of "that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it." (Zechariah 12:3)

And just what does this sound like:

And this shall be the plague wherewith the Lord will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth. (Zechariah 14:12)

Here is the deal. Much like the tithe, God has made certain promises surrounding the Nation of Israel...

“There are two key passages in the Bible where God promises to bless those who support Israel and to curse those who do not. The first one is found in Gen. 12:2-3. God is speaking to Abraham when He says the following:

And I will make you a great nation,
And I will bless you,
And make your name great;
And so you shall be a blessing;
And I will bless those who bless you,
And the one who curses you I will curse.
And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.” (NASB) Gen. 12:2-3

God promises to make Abraham’s descendants a great nation, and He promises to bless them. But anyone who seeks to harm them will be cursed. This is the reason to support Israel. Any nation in the world who seeks to harm Israel will find God’s wrath upon it. God’s wrath will come when He chooses. For some it will not occur until the end of the world (Rev. 18:1-2,24; 20:11-15). The second key passage is found in Gen. 27:29. It has the same idea of Genesis 12:2-3.”

For unbelievers, it doesn’t really matter what they think about it, they are cursed anyway. But for the Nation and people that believe God, it is promise. Do you want to be blessed by God, or cursed?

We support Israel because the US had the chance to stop the Holocaust at the 1938 Evian Conference ... and did nothing.

Then history presented America another opportunity to save Europe’s Jews at the 1943 Bermuda Conference ... and again it did nothing.

In 1939 some 900 Jewish refugees managed to escape Germany and boarded a German-flagged passenger liner, the MS St Louis, bound for the New World. They first made port at Havana but the Cubans only allowed the handful who were seriously ill or had US visas to disembark. So they set sail again hoping to make an American port but the US Coast Guard (acting on orders from the US Secretary of State, who probably was following instructions from FDR) warned them off from American waters. They sailed as far north at Nova Scotia but the Canadians refused them entry, too.

The St. Louis had no option but to return to Europe. A bit less than a third of her Jewish refugees were accepted by the UK but the rest settled in the European low countries, all of which were overrun by the Bundeswehr in 1940. And at least half of them died at the hands of the Nazis.

We support Israel because the Jews were kicked from pillar to post for almost two millennia. Victimized and persecuted everywhere they tried to settle, and when Hitler tried to exterminate them, we did too little, too late.

But now they once again have a nation of their own, for the Jews and by the Jews. And their history makes it obvious that this is their last best chance. They’ve been chased out of every country on earth and now they are (metaphorically) painted into this tiny little corner in the Arabian desert, the very place their forefathers settled 3000 years ago.

Israel isn’t so much a country as it is a lifeboat for the Jewish peoples. And events of the 20th Century make it clear that the Jews can’t count on anyone apart themselves to look after their security. For them, there is nowhere else to flee too. For them, this is “do or die.” If the modern nation of Israel should cease to exist, it is very likely that the Jewish people would as well.

There is no redemption for the lack of humanity we showed them during WWII but perhaps there can be some measure of atonement in our helping to assure the success of their new nation. We support Israel now — at any cost — because if we don’t, neither history ... nor God ... will forgive us.
