An amateur treasure hunter struck gold — literally.
Kevin Duckett was hunting for treasure with his metal detector in a field near Market Harborough, Northamptonshire, England, when he unearthed a solid gold figurine that experts believe is part of a long-lost part of the crown of Henry VIII.
“At first I wondered if it was a crumpled foil dish from a 1970s Mr. Kipling product, or even a gold milk bottle top,” Duckett told the Sun.
“I got a very loud positive signal from my detector and started to dig down before spotting something … It was lodged in the side of a hole just a few inches down.”
Duckett had found a 2½-inch, solid gold and enamel figure that has been lost for over 400 years.
In 1649, Oliver Cromwell abolished the monarchy, beheaded King Charles I and ordered the crown, once worn by Henry VIII, to be melted down, minted and sold as coins — orders that weren’t followed.
According to the Sun, the crown’s 344 precious stones were sold separately while other parts of the crown were passed on intact — never to be seen again.
*SNIP*
The piece is now being held at the British Museum.

Quite a way for karma to make up for having to grow up with that surname.
[[r even a gold milk bottle top]]
Gee, they must be rich over there

Arti c le didn’t say if he got any deniro for it
He wrote a good book and Marital Therapy.
And he will soon learn that nothing belongs to “subjects.” This belongs to the Crown: “Thanks for finding it.”
“...there is a brit show called The Detectorist with Diana Rigg’s daughter”
yeah, forgot about that..she showed up later for a few shows.but it’s the daughters voice that attracted my attention
We fell in love with them all on, ‘The Detectorists.’ Wish it had gone on longer. :(
The guy who played the older male lead was also a super villain in an episode of ‘Sherlock’ and he was awesome in it. Very scary, crazy dude!
Liberals only wish they could behave like Oliver Cromwell. Give it 20 years or less.
See Post #27. We loved it. You caught that Diana Rigg played her real-life daughter’s mother in the series, I assume?
And thank you! ‘Pirates’ was where we saw the skinny guy before. Couldn’t place him! :)
From what I understand, the British govt sets a value on “treasure” pieces found by its citizens, then offers the finder approx 50% of the value of the piece and the govt keeps the piece. Actually quite a fair policy.
I understand that for “treasure” (Roman coins, antiquities, etc) but I am willing to bet they have a different take on stuff that is actually “royal.”
I would to see the guy make out from this. 50% of a ton, is pretty good!
+1
Anne Boleyn’s headpiece is still missing.
As I understand it, ‘treasure trove’ is something that has been hidden as opposed to just lost. Treasure trove belongs to the Crown. The local coroner makes the decision as to what constitutes treasure trove. But the government wisely offers full value for any treasure it chooses to keep for itself (usually local museums). But something that actually belonged to a monarch, like a crown or bits thereof may be something different entirely.
This topic was posted by Diana in Wisconsin, thanks freds6girlies for the ping! Sorry, I'd missed this.
I’m one of the seven Henry’s before ya!
She wouldn’t have a Willie or a Sam.
Henry VIII keyword, sorted, cleaned up a little:
Makenzie Crook. He's been playing the lead role of "Worzel Gummidge," a scarecrow that comes to life in a family program on British TV.
Steve Pemberton is featured as well. Pemberton and Reece Sheersmith have worked together on several programs, ie., "The League of Gentlemen," "Psychoville," and their most recent long-run series of "Inside No. 9."
Enjoyed the show thoroughly. If you can ever find it, the British comedy series "Plebs" is another show I'd recommend:
The series ended after the 6th season, but there is supposed to be a movie in the works.
