Exciting News From Carnival Corp., Pause Extensions and More (Video)
Cruise Critic ^ | January 15, 2021 | Cruise Critic Staff

(3:30 p.m. EST) -- In this week's edition of our latest video series, This Week in Cruise News, Cruise Critic's Managing Editor UK Adam Coulter talks about further pauses in operations from two big lines, takes a look at what's happening with the Alaska cruise season and discusses the big reveal from Carnival Corp CEO Arnold Donald about when the fleet will get back sailing. Stay tuned for next week's video update, and check out last week's video, which highlights everything you need to know about the exciting new ships slated for 2021, and when cruisers might expect to get back onboard. Video Transcript: Hello cruisers and welcome to This Week In Cruise News, brought to you by Cruise Critic. My name is Adam Coulter and I'm the Managing Editor of Cruise Critic here in the UK.

Well what a week it's been. We're only days into 2021 and there's already so much cruise news out there. But don't you worry - this is where we come in.

We've taken a look at those stories that are really making the headlines and then decided which one of those we think you guys should know about.

So there's three stories I'd like to focus on in the next couple of minutes, and the first is the extension in the pause to cruising, the second is doubts remaining over the Alaska season, and then there's some very exciting news from Carnival Corp. So first, let's take a look at those extensions.

We've got two major announcements that happened this week. First is from Royal Caribbean Group and that includes Royal Caribbean itself, of course, Silversea, Azamara and Celebrity Cruises. Now they're extending their pause in cruising until the end of April. The other main cruise line which is extending its pause is MSC Cruises, and that's until March 31. But bear in mind, that's North America only. MSC Cruises actually restarted cruising in Italy last summer and they are actually planning to restart again at the end of this month in Italy and for Italians only, so that's a bit of good news.

Okay next let's take a look at Alaska. We've got pauses in cruising there from Princess until mid-May and Holland America Line until May and also June. Of course this comes on top of Carnival canceling all their cruises on Carnival Miracle, and both Cunard and Windstar both canceling their entire 2021 season.

But it's not all bad news. There's actually some very exciting news coming in from Carnival Corp. in an investors relations call this week.

Carnival Corp. CEO Arnold Donald, when asked, "when are we likely to see your ships back on the water?" -- and bear in mind, Carnival Corp. encompasses nine different brands, including Holland America Line and Princess. He replied, "...by the end of this year." So that, ladies and gentlemen, is a bit of good news for you to end up this week in cruise news. Now if you want to learn more about this week's cruise news or stay up to date with the latest in the industry, please click on the news tab on CruiseCritic.com, or click on one of the links in the Youtube description below. And if you like this week's video, please click the like button below and let us know what you think of it in the comments. So that's all folks. Until next week, thank you very much. Bye-Bye."

Tom here- Good gravy, that is considered good news from a cruise line occurring millions of dollars in debt every month?

I guess you have to put the best face on a problem you can't control, and which involves many livelihoods asea and ashore, and Billions of borrowed dollars. -Tom

Who, in their right mind, would go on a cruise this year?

Even if you think you're immune to illness, what about getting stranded at sea because they won't let you dock the ship?

Why not do a test cruise on a small ship? They could do it on a volunteer basis for free. Several hundred passengers and crew all verified inoculated with the vaccine. The companies would need some kind of legal disclaimer for responsibility in case of illness. Send them out for 10-14 days at least a month after their 2nd inoculation and see if any get sick.
If it’s successful it will give the cruise companies and passengers confidence to start cruising again.

What you said is another factor in the Cruise lines pulling out of this debt spiral.

I volunteer to go aboard in summer. I am stranded now with risky flights and closed restaurants. If I am stranded on a ship, at least I won’t be cooking and cleaning pots and dishes. And get food & room free. I am quite OK with that.

My last cruise was on Carnival Ecstacy ending February 29th. Sure I got infected. But that was a good thing. With daily gym routine of mine, my body fought it off with just a little dry cough, and in the process I gained some immunity.

I bought carnival cruise stocks because I know they will be back. Made 8 bucks per share already. Plus they give 100 dollar ship board credit if you have 100 shares. Great company. Cruise must be 7 days of its 50 bucks....still not bad.

I keep saying this, and I really believe it.

The incoming coup will listen to groups that say
1. Cruise ships are environmentally polluting and should be banned.
2. Cruising is cultural appropriation and should be banned
3. Cruising is just a bunch of old white Trump voters, and should be banned
4. Cruising is inherently racist, and should be banned.
5. Cruising is fun and we can’t have fun because of .......

If you have a choice of a future Cruise credit or a refund take the refund while you can. Dog-Face & Pony Soldier are are going to kill this industry in the name of party, environmental and social justice purity.

Those who think all cruisers are old white people, try a Carnival cruise out of Jacksonville, FL. There are always lots of black people on those cruises. Jacksonville has a lot of prosperous blacks.

Smart trade in Carnival stock when it was beaten down.
Expect to triple your money in couple of years.

I know that. As do you. I’m just saying that the ignorant, primarily white enviro NAZIs who would never set foot on anything as low class as a cruise ship don’t and they have administration’s ear.

The left is nothing except narrowminded bigots.

Cruise Critic prohibits mentioning specific travel agents. They say they don’t want to clutter their threads with such discussions. They also say they want to improve cruising for everyone and save them money. However, the quickest way to save money would be to allow discussions of travel agent pricing. They do allow travel agents to advertise on their site. None of these agents discount prices.

BTW, contact Nancy Bogert, Cruise Planners if you’re interested in saving 8-10% of the fares charged by the cruise lines.

The worldometers site lists comprehensive case, recovered and death data for the virus. For the US, they categorize by state and also some special segments. Like Dept of Veteran Affairs.

They also list 2 cruise ships. Diamond Princess had 46 cases and no deaths. Grand Princess had 122 cases and 7 deaths. No idea what the difference was for the two of them. It was early days of the virus.

There are always lots of black people on those cruises.

On the only cruise I have ever taken, we shared a dinner table with a black couple and a white couple. We never saw the white couple except for dinner. We constantly ran into the black couple both on the ship and during shore excursions. Fun times.

These days, I'm getting emails from American Airlines inviting me to book a cruise. I won't until everyone has had a Covid-19 shot. I'm so looking forward to traveling again.

Have they re-flagged as US ships yet? They should get no funding from the US so long as they are foreign owned and foreign flagged. Nor any special consideration.

Forget desire.

After Deep State starts tanking the economy, who’ll have the money?

Cruises are probably nice things to do if you are into them, but honestly, every cruise ship on the planet could vanish and I could see no way that it would have an impact on the lives of anyone I know.
