The best buy in Ham radio today is the ICOM7300.

An outstanding 100watt SDR rig with all the bells and whistles one needs.

1100.00 delivered....

I have only done digital on my 2M rig. Through the WIRES system on a Yaesu.

That said, I know that you will need a transceiver than is compatible and an SDR card if your rig doesn’t have one. I understand MOST new rigs are coming with them now.

I would imagine the ARRL would have information on their site. It has been on my to do list. Drop me a note if you get anywhere. Its time I upgraded my skills—I’ve gotten rust.

73s.

I am looking into getting into this hobby, I have been reading a lot about the AnyTone AT-D878UV PLUS. Is this a good starter radio? Thank you.

None of it is encrypted per se. Transmitting in code is verbotten, if I recall my test.

That said, developing a code system among friends is never a horrible idea. Just don’t ever suggest I suggested it.

From Wikipedia:

The term "ham" was first a pejorative term used in professional wired telegraphy during the 19th century, to mock operators with poor Morse code-sending skills ("ham-fisted"). This term continued to be used after the invention of radio and the proliferation of amateur experimentation with wireless telegraphy; among land- and sea-based professional radio operators, "ham" amateurs were considered a nuisance. The use of "ham" meaning "amateurish or unskilled" survives today sparsely in other disciplines (e.g. "ham actor").

When I was studying, I put the sample tests from the ARRL on my ipad and iphone. And I literally sat there watching TV at night (my wife watches basketball and I am ambivalent) taking the test. Over and over and over. I did that for all three tests.

I was able to memorize the answers (there IS a method to memorization) and pass all three tests in three consecutive Wednesday nights.

Then I spent the next two years learning this stuff.

Some countries permit encryption
for emergency communications, training activities,
and to preventi unauthorized access.

I spent some time on the ARRL sight, but it overwhelmed me. I dont know what I dont know yet. Same thing happens when I google for HAM radio gear. I just dont know enough to know what I want to buy. So many options and add ons. Thats why I thought I’d reach out.

I am getting some recommendations from the thread. Thanks

I used to run a Hot Water 101, and if you know what that is you are an OM...lol

I’m mostly QRP now...love my old ICOM 703.

Just ordered some FT140-43 toroids to make up several 1/2 wave, end-fed wire antennas. Great performers, cover multiple bands wo need of a tuner.... the FT140-43 is for 20watt SSB or less the FT240-43 is good for 100watts.
