I spent some time on the ARRL sight, but it overwhelmed me. I dont know what I dont know yet. Same thing happens when I google for HAM radio gear. I just dont know enough to know what I want to buy. So many options and add ons. Thats why I thought I’d reach out.

I have been interested in something like this for some time but the need just hasn't been there. Looking at the political situation and what we could potentially be facing, I thought it would be a good idea to have some means of communicating with the outside world.
I found the same thing. So much info that it's overwhelming and I don't even know where to start.
Kind of like trying to clean out a closet.
Are you looking for HF gear? I know you are interested in packet radio. That ship sailed in the 90s with the advent of email and internet unfortunately. But, there are still things going on. Things like JS8Call or similar digital platforms that allow long distance contact and brief messaging. I will let you know about my journey on building a RPi4 computer. Not the first time. I did build an allstar node for 220, which was cool.

Mag, if you join ARRL they now have a magazine for beginners that you can choose get instead of their monthly magazine. It is very helpful. Maybe take it on like eating an elephant :-) I got my tech several years ago then was diverted learning Hebrew. Ready to go back to get general.
