Stand-up comic Saikiran's dissection of India's obsession with fairness is not just skin-deep.
who cares?
The same mindset being poked existed in Thailand, in the early 70’s. Every Thai national of Burmese and Malay background , bought cosmetics to emulate their lighter skinned cousins, which were all the rage in their versions of supermarket magazines.
One of the comments there (paraphrased): “This is a funny but sad result of European colonialism.”
The Chinese do the same thing.
Japanese chicks used umbrellas on sunny days at UF.
Shows how funny we are as a species. Darker skinned people try to lighten their skin and whites try to tan and darken their skin.
LOL! He’s good!
But compared with some South Indians I’ve known, he’s very fair. Some of them are Black - and I don’t mean ‘African Dark-Brown Black’, but BLACK.
(And the obsession with fair skin is prevalent in many parts of the world - Asia and Mexico/South America, for instance.)
If you go into an American pharmacy, you’ll find aisles full of products that ‘Black’ people use to lighten their skin and straighten their hair. And other aisles filled with products that White people use to tan their skin and curl their hair.
We want to be each other. Nobody is ever satisfied.
In the time I lived in Bali Indonesia local women wore full sleeve sweaters to prevent tanning of their skin. 90 degrees with high humidity they kept covered. Skin bleaching creams big sellers.
I am reminded of Dr. Seuss’ Sneetches.
Balinese women used to walk around naked from the waist up.
Then Bali came under the control of a Muslim nation, Indonesia.
In Vietnam I saw women shading their faces with conical hats or parasols. Dark skin is for peasants.
That comment over there is idiotic: the obsession has to do with the Brahmin caste, which has kept mixed as little as possible with the natives since the Indo-Aryan invaders arrived 3,500 years ago.
ALL cultures show preference for lighter skinned people. The ruling class of any culture is always biased toward light skin. If a Dravidian black guy overthrows the king in a generally dark skinned society he will marry off his own progeny to the lighter skinned members of that society. Those coal black South Indians are genetically Caucasian. Some have blue eyes.
The evanescence of the manic depression was an unexpected side effect of the sunshine treatment which I had advised for her constant illness. I have since researched that and find that some neuros and doctors say that sunshine (vitamin D) is the only effective medication for depression.
No. It is a universal preference. In the darkest societies as well is in Nordic circles Mamma is apt to comment on son’s girlfriend, “But isn’t she a little dark?”
In a wealthy generally free society light skinned girls can be obsessed with a “healthy tan.” In all others light is right.
Sun deprived people also tend to have a higher incidence of cancer since cancer and immune system health are closely related. One of highest risk groups in the US are dark complexioned African Americans living in northern states.
My neighbor married a woman from China...she does the same thing here in south Alabama.
I think that historically it’s been the same way with excessive ‘avoirdupois’ :-)
