Trump administration deregulates frozen cherry pie
National Post ^ | Dec. 18, 2020 | Emily Heil - WAPO

The Trump administration has taken steps to roll back some pretty high-profile rules. You might have heard of its moves to eliminate the ban on drilling for oil on public land, or maybe anti-fracking rules, or the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals policy.

But here’s another deregulatory effort that has flown more under the radar: the Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday proposed scrapping its rules governing the makeup of…frozen cherry pies.

Small potatoes? Maybe. But Scott Gottlieb, the former FDA chief, applauded it as a fat slice of liberty for the populace. “The American people are free (to) add extra fruit, sugar, and make the crust especially thick,” he tweeted.

Here’s how we got to the Freedom Pie phase: For decades, the FDA has set precise and detailed standards for all kinds of food products, spelling out, for example, the proportion of fruit that goes into a jam, mandating that gumbo must contain okra (unless it’s labeled “Creole-style”), and dictating that fajitas must contain no less than 15 percent meat.

I loved those Hostess "fruit" pies; the chocolate was my favorite.

I loved those and the 29 cent mini Table Talk pies. I usually went for Blueberry. When Hostess went bankrupt its new incarnation cheaped out on product and compromised taste for shelf life. Also made the formerly 4 1/2 ounce pies smaller.

Oddly, the 50 cent Walmart mini pies are better, but not in the same class as the old Hostess (with its sugar shellaced crust) or even the old Drake's fruit pies.

New versions of Ding Dongs are also not up to snuff. The Suzi Q's were a disaster until they tried again, and now they are passable.

I cannot get Drake's Funny Bones here in Arizona, unfortunately.

A big slice of Freedom Pie sounds nice, but I’m guessing the regulations were in place to prevent someone selling a 10 inch “Cherry Pie” which contained only 5 whole cherries. Most of the contents being nothing more than cherry flavored gel.

Which would bankrupt any company not selling to public schools, the federal government and the military.

That’s true in a well communicated market but with one of our size, or when products come in from other countries, a lousy product could be sold for years without making a dent in sales.

The McIntosh is a great apple. Not a great keeping apple but oh so good. Of course the Pink Lady is great as well and does store well. But then there is the Winesap that produces a great cider.

Picking my favorite apple is like trying to pick a favorite child.

My husband likes the honey crisp.

Now if he’d overturn Obama’s ban on clove cigarettes (why???), I’d be a happy hipster pony girl. My black market stock is running low and my source has dried up.

I really don't care if a bad product continues to thrive as long as it is not dangerous.

Justin Bieber, MVMT watches, Burger King, etc. continue to thrive despite their mediocrity. I don't listen to Bieber, buy MVMT watches, or eat at Burger King and the FDA had nothing to do with that decision.

Yeah, I grew up in apple/maple country. When I first located down here, I planted a single tree which was mislabeled Red Delicious. Red it wasn’t. It took a couple of years to realize I’d planted a Granny Smith. My wife and I were picking them faster than she could cook/can with them, and the neighbor kids started to come around with a laundry basket and pick them. I also put in a dwarf Elberta peach tree that had divine fruit. A house fire forced us to buy new digs, so on top of the apple trees, I put in another Elberta, a late red peach, a nectarine, and a Kieffer pear, all fruit bearing. Plus a hedge row of Northland blueberries. The idea is an edible landscape. About half are getting to be fruit-bearing size now, if I can just keep the critters away. I had a nice little crop of pears coming in last year, and the squirrels ransacked the tree.
