Trump administration deregulates frozen cherry pie
National Post ^ | Dec. 18, 2020 | Emily Heil - WAPO

The Trump administration has taken steps to roll back some pretty high-profile rules. You might have heard of its moves to eliminate the ban on drilling for oil on public land, or maybe anti-fracking rules, or the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals policy.

But here’s another deregulatory effort that has flown more under the radar: the Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday proposed scrapping its rules governing the makeup of…frozen cherry pies.

Small potatoes? Maybe. But Scott Gottlieb, the former FDA chief, applauded it as a fat slice of liberty for the populace. “The American people are free (to) add extra fruit, sugar, and make the crust especially thick,” he tweeted.

Here’s how we got to the Freedom Pie phase: For decades, the FDA has set precise and detailed standards for all kinds of food products, spelling out, for example, the proportion of fruit that goes into a jam, mandating that gumbo must contain okra (unless it’s labeled “Creole-style”), and dictating that fajitas must contain no less than 15 percent meat.

A big slice of Freedom Pie sounds nice, but I’m guessing the regulations were in place to prevent someone selling a
10 inch “Cherry Pie” which contained only 5 whole cherries.
Most of the contents being nothing more than cherry flavored gel.

It's one thing when the FDA has a regulation that protects the average citizen from something they are unable to verify themselves, e.g. that a product contains a small amount of something that is known to be carcinogenic.

However, if the regulation prevents something that the average citizen can confirm for himself, then it needs to go. If I get a cherry pie from a company that is mostly crust and sugar with very few cherries, then I will not buy from them in future, and may very well return the pie I just bought for a refund.

The government can't hope to protect us from every underhanded action by greedy corporations.

I don't think that McDonalds accepts returns in their Drive-Thru windows.

I bought one of those once.

I didn't need the FDA to tell me it wasn't sufficiently "cherry pie".

In college, we would buy them, cut them open, and count the number of cherries inside.

I think the average was around four.

As a kid, I loved those Hostess "fruit" pies; the chocolate was my favorite. Just for fun I bought one recently. It was nasty . . . mostly a sickly-sweet high-fructose corn syrup goo.

Cherry Pie --- Marvin and Johnny

Like little Jack Horner sitting in a corner
Eating his cherry pie.
Only I didn't put in a thumb and pull out a plum,
So I guess I'm not as great as he was, no, no.

I have heard of unsatisfied McDonalds customers crawling through the drive thru window to beat up employees. Is that considered a return?

The same is true with me. I also liked Synthetic Processed Artificial Meat (Spam), but I wouldn't eat either today.

Truly disgusting. There are off-brands that still taste like fruit, though.
