There was a time when bananas were considered a perfectly reasonable option for a dish’s main component. Food in loaf form was also popular. Cookbooks with names like McCall’s Great American Recipe Card Collection and Betty Crocker’s Dinner in a Dish Cookbook trotted these dishes out as quick and easy ways to feed your family and impress your guests, and similar recipes were also featured in magazines like Family Circle and Better Homes and Gardens.
We’re not sure if dishes like these were all some sort of prank orchestrated by the editors of these magazines, or whether Betty Crocker and Better Homes were getting serious kickbacks from the mayonnaise, gelatin, and banana industries. But believe it or not, everything here was published with complete sincerity, and, presumably, some people actually cooked these recipes and fed them to their families or friends.
Here are 17 recipes from the 1971 Betty Crocker card catalogue, a collection of dishes we should be glad we’ll (most likely) never be forced to eat.

Just this weekend I bought a 1965 edition of the ring binder Betty Crocker cookbook. I have the picture one and a reproduction picture one, but didn’t have the original! The 1965 one has the same 1950’s photos and recipes. Real basics!

Great basic American cooking book. That and the old Joy of Cooking are kitchen basics. The center reference section of Joy is the best.

The brown and harvest gold and avocado green were the more earthy and natural looks as a change from the pinks and lime greens of the 50s and early 60s

Cool! I did not know that. Did they recommend putting the foil-wrapped food in with the detergent and dishes? Otherwise, where’s the savings? I guess it’s possible...

Chicken salad with fruit in it ... yuk. My friend brags about how everyone loves her chicken salad, and when I tried it, there were GRAPES in it.

In the 1970s Pop Tarts made the scene, and we had Spatini (sp) a tomato sauce powder mixed with water. I also like fried bologna.

Used to buy it in the store, like a giant sausage like 8 inches long but the regular bologna diameter.
Cut of a slice like 1/4 inch thick, slab it in rye bread and dijon mustard, pop a brew and off to the races!
