Vitamin D levels during pregnancy linked with child IQ

"Vitamin D deficiency is quite prevalent," Melough said. "The good news is there is a relatively easy solution. It can be difficult to get adequate vitamin D through diet, and not everyone can make up for this gap through sun exposure, so a good solution is to take a supplement."

The recommended daily intake of vitamin D is 600 international units (IU). On average, Americans consume less than 200 IU in their diet, and so if people aren't making up that gap through sun exposure or supplementation, Melough says people will probably become deficient. Foods that contain higher levels of vitamin D include fatty fish, eggs and fortified sources like cow's milk and breakfast cereals. However, Melough notes that vitamin D is one of the most difficult nutrients to get in adequate amounts from our diets.

Additional research is needed to determine the optimal levels of vitamin D in pregnancy, but Melough hopes this study will help to develop nutritional recommendations for pregnant women.

Vitamin D is needed for healthy bones, not brains. Finding links is easy, showing causation is hard. This is junk science.

I love vitamin D and take big doses every day (10,000 - 20,000iu). However, I am still chronically D-ficient. My 4 kids have IQs of 145, 167, 153, 161. So I don’t believe this. I do think D has tons of other benefits and most of us should be taking it.

If that was correct, then wouldn't the Congo be filled with rocket scientists?

Most of my life I thought they added vitamin D to milk, like pouring it into a vat and mixing it up. Then I learned that they just pump the milk through parallel glass plates and expose it to UV light, where the UV converts the cholesterol into Vitamin D.

Agreed that this report of the study at lewst doesn’t show causation, but D linked to more than just healthy bones.

Ok, going to step into the skin color issue.

First, you have to have intelligence to pass it on and the gumption/culture to grow it. Asians, on the whole, push their kids to become more educated but the minority EBT crowd, on the whole, fails their kids miserably. The Congo is smart enough to keep getting whitey to dig their latrines for all these centuries but can’t seem to grasp the dangers of bush meat.

Second, the darker the skin, the less it absorbs Vit D. For lighter skins, it takes 20 minutes of being out in the sunshine to absorb the daily recommended amount of Vit D. Some in the medical field have pushed Vit D supplements for darker skinned during covid.

“Vitamin D is needed for healthy bones, not brains. Finding links is easy, showing causation is hard. This is junk science.”

And that was a dismissive Junk Comment. in addition to bone health, vitamin D acts on a number pathways in the body not only in the overly simplistic way single pathway you suggest.

“Symptoms and Health Risks of Vitamin D Deficiency

Snip...”Symptoms of bone pain and muscle weakness can mean you have a vitamin D deficiency. However, for many people, the symptoms are subtle. Yet, even without symptoms, too little vitamin D can pose health risks. Low blood levels of the vitamin have been associated with the following:

Increased risk of death from cardiovascular disease
Cognitive impairment in older adults
Severe asthma in children
Cancer”
