Thunderbird 78 FAQ (Mozilla Thunderbird email client version 78 issues and resolution)
Mozilla Foundation ^ | July 2020 | Mozilla Support

Dayglored Note: Many Thunderbird users are finding operational issues after updating to Version 78 (including me). This FAQ addresses some of them, in particular the deprecation of TLSv1.1 and earlier, which will cause Thunderbird to be unable to send/receive email from some mail servers.

I have copied the FAQ content regarding that particular issue below. The whole page is useful, and is found here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/thunderbird-78-faq

After upgrading to Thunderbird 78, I cannot get or send email messages.

One reason why this might happen is when your email provider is using outdated security protocols. Thunderbird takes protecting the privacy and security of your communication serious. That is why, by default, Thunderbird 78 will not connect to servers that do not support the modern TLS 1.2 connection security protocol. So if your email provider only supports the outdated security protocols TLS 1.0 or TLS 1.1, downloading (receiving) and sending emails will not work by default. If you really need to connect to such mail servers with outdated security, or if you want to check if this is the cause of your problem, you can temporarily re-enable the older security protocols in Thunderbird settings.

How to enable outdated security protocols TLS 1.0 and 1.1

  1. Open Config Editor (about:config)
    • > OptionsPreferences > Find in OptionsPreferences
    • In the searchbox, type: about:config, then press Enter.
    • Click on the button Config Editor… in the search result.
  2. In the about:config dialog, search for: security.tls.version.min
  3. Double-click on the found preference security.tls.version.min and change its value to 1, then press Enter.
  4. Restart Thunderbird and try to download your messages.

If you can download your messages after changing this preference:

Thunderbird auto-updated on me the other day, and stopped communicating with my ISP's mail server. I spent a lot of time chasing down the problem and working around it until the ISP can update their TLS version.

Figured I'd pass the info along.

NONE of this worked for me yesterday, I had to reinstall 68.12.1 and because they CHANGED so much crap, my Address Book is Gone as well as the mail I sent, it only took 20 hours to download all the old mail from my server, which was Required before I could use it again. Updates are turned OFF.

I might just go back to Outlook if they continue to allow Children to write Code without ADULT SUPERVISION!!@!

Thanks for that update. My post yesterday dealt with only one problem (so far), moving open tabs to the top. See the link below for how that was resolved and other problems that were commented on.

Email SMTP hadn’t been invented in 78.

I noticed they changed the editor, but big deal, it’s still the best mail client for Windows, by far.

Just checked my version number. It’s 68.10.0 but I run Ubuntu and Thunderbird updates via the Ubuntu software repositories. If it ever screws up I’ll just use Evolution for everything. I use it for a few email accounts already that are associated with my own domain names.

Thanks for the info

My Ubuntu Thunderbird is likewise at 68. The repositories don't seem to get updates in a timely fashion, but in some cases like this it's a blessing in disguise. :-)

A little shot of T-Bird in the morning to get that motor humming.

I had exactly one experience with T-Bird, as a teenager. My system let me know shortly after ingestion that it was an unwelcome addition. Might have had something to do with the six-pack and large pizza I'd ingested earlier.

Ah, those were the days..... NOT. :-)

These major updates install without warning. They should at least have an option to revert back to the old version if someone is having serious problems.
