The pictures in the posts on this thread should be hysterical by the morning.

That article was surprisingly boring. They are envisioning space warfare as 19th century sea battles. I think, by the time it happens, speed and maneuverability will have advanced quite a bit.

...slow, calculated, and deliberate. Interesting. I thought it would be very quick -- major battles involving beam weapons and high-precision marksmanship, over in seconds.

FWIW, Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan was a great 'sea battle' in classic terms. There were so many great WW II submarine cat-and-mouse films it drew from: The Enemy Below, Run Silent, Run Deep, The Hunt For Red October. It's not a practical scenario at this juncture, but we know that our tech is bleeding edge enough that it would be possible in a limited way. I've always felt that the one thing holding us back from taking a big step forward in space is the energy source powering the craft. Chemical rockets and fission reactors just aren't going to cut it, no matter how refined they become.

You could read this article or you could read David Weber or Jerry Pournelle. Two guys who have thought about it a LOT and can write a cracking good story as well.

I think that other than energy weapons, something like a DREAD centrifugal machine gun, that spews thousands of high speed ball bearings every minute. Even just a heavy mallet could effectively bash a space ship.

What Would a Realistic Space Battle Look Like? Maybe some flashes of light, a puff of vapor, and an expanding cloud of metal fragments and shredded kapton foil. Sunlight reflecting off that debris might be visible in the daytime sky, like glitter.
I won't look like a "cinematic" space battle with flaming explosions.
To: LibWhacker
Battle in space would not have Star Wars sound effects.
