A box truck got stuck near the top of a treacherous mountain road in Colorado over the weekend, all because he was following his GPS.

The rugged mountain road is known as Engineer Pass, and is notorious for being one of the most tricky, treacherous, and steep backcountry roads in the area. The road has a peak elevation of 12,800 feet and requires four-wheel-drive and a high-clearance vehicle.

“How they got that far is beyond me,” said Silverton-based Animas Towing & Recovery owner Wayne Barger.

“They’re going to need a lot of help,” he said. “It’s in a predicament that’s really going to cost them.”

We used to 4WD not to far from there, more than once my wife suggested we 'retreat'; I had to explain it is not that easy. We had an Isuzu Trooper, not a 30 foot box truck.

I have driven over Engineer Pass. I don’t see how a 30 ft box truck could get far.

Same thing here in my area of the High Sierra of California a number of years ago. No GPS back then, just bad map reading.

I have an idea to get it down, but I don’t think they’re going to like it.

He could just drive straight forward. By the time the rear wheels clear the road the truck will blow up anyway. I learned this from Hollywood movies...

I caught a ride over that pass about 45 years ago, in the back of a pickup truck. About froze my fanny off...

He needs those guys on “Highway Thru Hell,” but they’re up in BC so that’ll cost him!

From the angle of the picture and vehicle, it looks like he had just started descending on the other side.

No, the youth have no idea how to read a map and no curiosity about where in the world they are.

A CH-54 might be able to crank them out of there.
