With the coronavirus pandemic still raging across America, this years NFL season opener was as different as night and day in many ways from the 100th season kickoff in 2019.
For one thing, as reigning Super Bowl champs the Kansas City Chiefs pummeled the Houston Texans 34-20, the ratings were down a lot.
In early numbers, the primetime NBC game scored a 5.2 among adults 18-49 and 16.4 million viewers between 8 11 PM ET.
Now, those numbers for the 8:25 11:30 PM ET game itself will certainly be adjusted upward later, but right now thats a 16.1% drop over the spectacle of the September 5, 2019 season opener among the advertiser rich demographic. In an America and a NFL still adjusting to the new normal of live sports in the era of COVID-19, last nights Kansas City victory also fell 16.1% in total sets of eyeballs from last years fast affiliate results but remember, those numbers will change in one form or another later today.
Having said that, right now, the TV viewership results for the game in front of 17,000 socially distanced fans at KCs more than 76,000 capacity Arrowhead Stadium is looking like a 10-year low for the NFL and NBC.

That was 1 Sport I really enjoyed watching through my 50+ years. But yesterday, I worked late instead of hurrying home to “BE READY” for kick-off, as it has been for as long as I can remember. Funny how priorities change; the NFL (NBA,MLB etc) has no idea how they are destroying their image + I am proud to see them ruin themselves.
I’d like to see a plane loaded with pig shit unload on the players mid game.
Spectator sports are now dead to me. Went to the range Wednesday. Going fishing Monday.
You pretty much nailed it.

Didn’t the players explain racism and social justice to the stupid rednecks in the audience?
I don’t understand why people are mad.
Because it isn’t really about the profit from the fans, it is the message
I never cared about football. Now I do.
I *hate* what the NFL has done. Yeah, football is not my jam, but, I can understand now that it’s part of Americana.
Libtards have been after football for a long time. Remember all of the hysteria about how *dangerous* contact sports are and they must be banned from schools?
Better yet, let’s just isolate kids away from each other entirely.
How fragile do they need their ignorant snowflakes to be?
Hard to believe that this is the same nation that produced the men who stormed the beach at Normandy.
The NFL has already jumped the shark but I would not be surprised if they start publicly flogging white, self-hating leftist volunteers at halftime shows.
Oh yes they have
Doesn’t actually sound like that much, considering.
We must be desperate for our circuses to go with our bread.
I have been thinking the same for a very long time. Swear to God, many male sport super fans are suffering from some form of same-sex attraction or are just outright homosexuals.
Okay, I’ll say it. This drop in TV ratings has nothing to do with covid-19. At home they don’t have to socially distance. They can all sit in the same room and watch. So this is just another lie and if people buy into it, they are real sheep. And I’m sure many of us know what the real problem is.

Baseball threw out the general manager of the defending champions for standing in the upper deck without a mask. Screw baseball.
I wish, but I think there's a floor to how low sports can go, given the large gambling interest in them (which will likely grow).
Don’t overthink it. I’ve been a super fan for most of my life. I’m not a homosexual. But enough is enough.
Sports used to be a passage to life and manhood for young boys. But is no longer that. I sat in the bullpen with the Milwaukee Brewers at 12. 1971 spring training. No fences. They chewed tobacco and talked about the women they were running with. My father laughed when I told him their stories.
It was the admiration George Patton talked about. Seems to me he wasn’t gay either.

Sounds like an asinine statement from someone who always hated sports but secretly wished he could be one of the regular guys in sports bars cheering something he could not begin to understand on the big screen.
I admire Tom Brady for who is is: an overlooked regular guy who rose to be one of the (if not THE) very best in history at his position. He is good looking and attracted chicks galore until he got a smoking hot wife.
I admire him like I do James Bond (or Donald Trump). He is very good at a game I love to watch and now miss terribly.
None of that makes me or any other guy sports fan (even “super fans” whatever those are) gay.
Call an average L.A. Raiders fan or any NASCAR fan gay and you can then call me from the hospital or your next of kin can call me to invite me to your service.
