With the coronavirus pandemic still raging across America, this years NFL season opener was as different as night and day in many ways from the 100th season kickoff in 2019.
For one thing, as reigning Super Bowl champs the Kansas City Chiefs pummeled the Houston Texans 34-20, the ratings were down a lot.
In early numbers, the primetime NBC game scored a 5.2 among adults 18-49 and 16.4 million viewers between 8 11 PM ET.
Now, those numbers for the 8:25 11:30 PM ET game itself will certainly be adjusted upward later, but right now thats a 16.1% drop over the spectacle of the September 5, 2019 season opener among the advertiser rich demographic. In an America and a NFL still adjusting to the new normal of live sports in the era of COVID-19, last nights Kansas City victory also fell 16.1% in total sets of eyeballs from last years fast affiliate results but remember, those numbers will change in one form or another later today.
Having said that, right now, the TV viewership results for the game in front of 17,000 socially distanced fans at KCs more than 76,000 capacity Arrowhead Stadium is looking like a 10-year low for the NFL and NBC.

The NFL is playing now? Who knew?!
I won’t rest until the viewership drops to zero.
Ive noticed that in the baseball world theres absolutely no mention of BLM or any of this crap at all and their deaths down to business in the baseball and theyre pretty much ignoring the coronavirus crap as well
No this is just the first game in football and the old saying is its all fine and dandy until somebody smashes you in the face
And this I think we can expect some virtue signaling for week one and week two but all that will fade away and itll just be getting down to real football very quickly
You will notice the liberal idiot who wrote this article open with with the coronavirus still raging in America which is a complete total and utter lie
This stupid novel coronavirus the 10th known one with seven variance is just another flu and really not even as bad as a twin and one and everybody knows it the jury is not out and so the media will just try to continue to lie but were only left with California New York trying to impose shut down
My question is when will America have had enough of this coronavirus bull crap?
They will adjust (fake) the numbers upward to support their narrative.
The stands need to be empty for the next one.
Not as long as Liberals/Commies/DemocRATs are running professional sports. For those people all that matters is their AGENDA.
To me, it is very disappointing that rating were down only 16%. That is a sad statement about America that so many people are willing to support professional and farm-team (college) sports when those leagues clearly state their hate for America and Americans at every single opportunity.
Who?
I wonder if the article showed the demographic that was down the least?
It was down because the game wasn’t close. Nothing about the protest.
Fell from last year, but wasn't last year down from previous years?
How much was last night's down from say 3 or 5 years ago when I'm assuming the NFL was more popular?
Yeah a 16% drop is discouraging given the circumstances. Should be at least 30, 40%.
I wonder if they can factor in that the tv screens were being watched by fewer people per screen? No big crowds in sports bars this time round
What is or was the NFL?
FU NFL. GTFO to Red China and don’t come back.
Yet they still were there...
I am disappointed to hear so many people turned out.
Needs to be 0
There are going to be a lot of butt-hurt players when their contracts come up for renewal and they find out there is no money due to the reduced NFL revenue.
I would think that, all other things being equal, COVID would increase TV viewers. Shut in with nothing to do except wash sports.
